I am familiar with Opeth, got to see them 1.5-2 years ago in St Pete, FL. Good show! First time I saw Dream Theater was in 1992, then I went through a grunge phase. :aww:

What's wrong with grunge? Are we all against that now? I'd rather listen to Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, and Nirvana than Djent...and I write prog metal.
Nothing except that's what my band plays so I'm kind of sick of it.

Lots of good suggestions. I've listened to a bunch of the early suggestions and Symphony X and Circus Maximus grabbed me right away. Somebody just mentioned Voivod and I was a fan of them in the late 80s/early 90's.

Check out Crimson Glory - Transcendence. Very solid prog metal and a bit older, like 1988.

Definitely Opeth and Symphony X!!!!

These are pretty damn good too!!!

i grew up on progmetal. I hate it now, unless there's a girl singing:

So you like Dream theater then?

Pagan's Mind and Evergrey are some of the best prog metal out there imo.

Does it have to be like balls out prog metal or can it be more mellow? Most of the prog I listen to doesn't have vocals since most of the singers in this type of genre sound like whiney pussies i.e. Periphery.
Good question! Post an example of something more mellow.

I don't need any vocals. Instrumentals are often my favorite songs. I do want the musicianship to be over-the-top proficient, that's much of the attraction for me. The Adel Rouhnavaz song I posted is right near the center of my prog metal radar screen.

Well you did say prog metal, but I was just wondering if you dug the shredding more or the heavy riffing. Lots of cool prog shredding with mid gain and cleaner tones that I've been caching lately. If you like the very heavy riffing you'll probably like Modern Day Babylon. He features Plini on some of the tracks and that guys amazing, chops for days.

Oh and since you mentioned Jeff Loomis you need to check out Marty Friedmans album from last year, Inferno. I find them very similar but I like Marty better for the most part, his phrasing is outstanding on that album. Jason Becker wrote a song with his eyes on there with some kind of software since he can't move anymore and they brought in someone to play it and it turned out killer

Surprised no one had mentioned Animals as leaders yet either.

EDIT: Damn, just realized I forgot a bunch of them. Scale the summit, Angel vivaldi, blotted science and that's really all I can think of. I'll post some links but it's gonna take a minute

Here is a list of some of the prog/djent guys that I LOVE.

THE OMEGA EXPERIMENT

KATATONIA

SKY HARBOR

There are more but this should keep you occupied for awhile :)

Omega experiment sounds good. Will have to check them out. I've been into Katatonia for a few years as well.

haha! love it when progmetal guys sing higher than girls.. not. haha
I don't think a DT recording could be slowed down enough to make it sound non-femme.

Someone already mentioned early Adagio (very Symphony X like), the guitar player Stephan Forte did an all instrumental album (kind of in the Jeff Loomis, Michael Romeo vein):

+1

I got a bit tired of "shadoooooooohhhhhs" "darknehhhhhss" etc. though (Evergrey's favorite lyrics). :)

Another band to consider: Symphony X. (edit) oops beaten to the punch. :)

Sikth!

..and 3:08+ is one of my favorite riffs of all time.
