Reb may be the stepchild in Whitesnake, but my guess is he's still got the gig because he's a great singer, and he's easy to work with....and he'd be a fool to leave that gig based on being a pissbaby for not getting enough of the lead player spotlight....he's been doing this long enough to know that there aren't a lot of available hard rock gigs that make money...and with Whitesnake he's actually playing good gigs...not bowling alleys and hick bars for 60 people in Bumblefuck Egypt on a Tuesday night in the dead of winter.
He probably makes a very comfortable living between that and the Winger gigs....and really what more can he ask for?
I pretty much in agreeance with you but the only reason why I said what I said is because it's got to be tough for him. That's all

I also don't think that he would be a fool to leave if he could land another gig but I'l leave it at that

I honestly think Reb is a chill dude that doesn't really care that much anymore about the ego stuff, he was on the cover of guitar mags 20 years ago, he doesn't have to prove anything to anyone.
This is exactly right. Reb views Winger as his main gig and does the Whitesnake thing because its fun and it pays well. He enjoys the perks of playing in Whitesnake...as he put it, "In Winger we travel by bus and stay in Hotel 6's...in Whitesnake we take jets and stay at the Four Seasons".

Reb never had a "rock star" attitude...hell, he still lives in Pittsburgh

He "gets it" that Whitesnake is Doug's gig and he's not bitter about his role...he's there for the experience and a decent paycheck.

it's like when you hear Eric Johnson on a Gdec. Sounds like Eric :)
which sounds like Joe Bonamassa on a Les Paul.

:D

I agree with Pete on this.

I think you can chalk up the woofie-ness to either the production or that Aldrich humbucker

could have also been due to using preamp tube covers

Perfect!

I love Aldrich's playing and tone.....but next time Coverdale should call Mr. Sykes.

I do hear a similarity in that tone to his recorded Whitesnake tone. My issue is I have been a fan of Dougs since about 1989. Maybe the problem is the Les Paul in Doug's hands. It's too fat.... it sounds like the pickup selector is in the middle position or that he dialed in his tone with a single coil loaded strat and then picked up a Les Paul and didn't touch a knob.

For comparison, I'm going to take us back to 1989. Now I don't want to hear any crap about Doug is trying to modernize or get with the times. He's playing guitar in freaking Whitesnake. His old tones and the style of his old bands is EXTREMELY similar to what he is doing now in Whitesnake. Here he is in Lion in 1989. If you want to skip to the lead it's just after the 2:00 minute mark. Tell me the young Doug Aldrich wasn't an extremely bad mutha on guitar. I like his playing when he puts the "extra" diatonic notes in there and doesn't dumb it down so much.

And then a couple of years later, still in the same Whitesnake vein, but better tone and way hipper guitar playing IMO.

I oftentimes come off as a Doug basher in threads, I'm not. I'm a huge fan. I just don't see why now that he's in one of his highest profile gigs ever, we're not getting the best Doug Aldrich ever.

I couldn't agree more Curt!! That tone, playing and writing style is exactly what comes to my mind the second somebody mentions his name. I would love to hear Doug return to that style!!

I hung out with Reb a few times when he was in Dokken, we even did a video shoot of a concert that was never released. He is a nice man and was consistently baffled as to why I kept calling him Lieutenant Dan.

It's the way he likes his tone. He dials it in like that! I guarantee he'd sound similar no matter what he played through. Exhibit A:

I'm not judging it or anything like that. he obviously likes that sorta thing. it wouldn't be the way I'd go about it, but, ya know... I ain't in Whitesnake

Sounds like Diezel amps would be a perfect fit for him. IMHO they're perfect for that woofy fuzzy sound.

What a Diezel hater... :lame:

Not a hater, i just don't like them and Doug's tone in that video sounds like what i hear from say, the Einstein. Which i just sold on Ebay....THANK GOD. Let's just say, i don't get those amps at all and i won't bother to try to get them anytime soon.

I totally agree with you on the front that if "Pop Star" of the moment was shopping for a guitarist and Reb had a shot at the gig he'd have to investigate...but Im curious if you aren't the MD(Which typically seems to go the keyboard player in those situations) if the cash would be THAT much better than what he's getting in WS....plus he still gets to play Still of the Night every night and not be a clean tone "Chunka Chunka" funky guy standing in the dark for most of the show....which is cool stuff...but Reb wants to ROCK:)

Most of my friends that are good players, you can give them a Dual rec or a Plexi or a Twin and an OD pedal and they will sort of make them all sound the same to some degree. Know what I mean? They dial the rig in to what their internal idea is of what they wanna hear. I think Doug likes that sound he gets. Gainy, not too tight and lots of bottom.

:D

I agree with Pete on this.

Eric Johnson must have been abused by a treble knob when he was younger.

His tone did get real dark and fuzzy for a while.

His new album has some of that, but also a return to some previous tones.

Don't get me wrong either, I think Doug rips on guitar.

Ya, I just have this theory that guys "hear" things a certain way. 100 percent agree with this. Uli Jon Roth once told me that the tone you go for takes shape in the mind first then from there all the other aspects need to coincide/follow ..I believe this to be accurate in Doug's case. Not a huge fan of Doug's style, but hey he's in Whitesnake and I'm not.

The majority of the internet would call some else crazy for saying that about the three different amps. Although it is true.

His tone in the video sounds like a bogner goldfinger or a bogner bogner no high mids

What's a Bogner Bogner?

I agree, sounds good but yeah someone needs to tell Coverdale he no longer requires closeups. He could scare a small child...or a large adult.
