Congrats on your new multi-watt! Sorry it isn't sounding that great to start with, but there are some options to tame the brightness of it.

I've always found the Rectifiers to be sensitive to preamp tube changes. I found a mix of RFTs and JJs darkened up my Triple quite a bit. If you have some laying around, try swapping them in and see if it darkens up enough.

Also worth trying out is a safe cab mismatch. I don't see guys talk about this much at all. I've had good results darkening up the tone for some rhythm tracks I was doing by running the 4 ohm output into a 8 ohm Recto cab.

Thanks for this suggesting the safe mismatch. When doing this it cuts some low end and clears things up. Can you explain what is happening here?

Thanks

Are you running your presence at 1:00? That seems a bit high.
no i had to cut it down to 11:00, everyday my settings change.

so i mixed up a pre tube cocktail and threw it in the recto and it sounds better now. the amp had the usual mesa JJ's.
so i put a RFT in v1, C9 hg in v2, and tungsol in v3.

Awesome! I saw that you also have a Sovtek. IIRC, I ran a Sovtek (long plate?) in V5. Also, try swapping the RFT between V1 and V3 and see if you like it better one way or the other. I'm happy that you were able to get it to sound better!

Basically, the mismatch makes the Output Transformer run cooler. You should NEVER run a guitar amp any lower than 4 ohms (most don't even have an output jack lower than 4 ohm), but it sounds darker because the amp is running cooler than it normally would. Sometimes the attack could be affected, so if an amp sounds too "ice-picky", it's a good way to limit shrillness, and still give you the ability to dial in your EQ without having to over compensate for any brightness.

Here's a section directly from the M/B Manual:

MIS-MATCHING:
When running a higher resistance (for example: 8 ohm output into 16 ohm cabinet), a slightly different feel and response will be eminent. A slight mismatch can provide a darker smoother tone with a little less output and attack. This response is a result of the amplifier running a bit cooler. Sometimes when using more than one cabinet a mismatch will be the only option.

I bought a used mesa roadtser in mint condition from gc, i should have it the middle of next week and im gonna compare my triple and see which i like better.
ive been thinking alot about the roadtser, i had one in 2009 and played it for over a year and really liked but alot but had to sell it to fund a guitar.
next week should be fun comparing the 2 amps and then figure out which i wanna keep.

Well, there's most of your problem. These amps are extremely sensitive to a minute change of a tone knob. Find where it sounds best and leave it. I haven't changed mine in four years or so. Maybe bump the bass down a little when recording with the Triple.
I haven't touched the knobs on my JTM45 in years.

I had my last dual rect for over a year and once i had my setting i never changed it.
Usually i can dial in my sound pretty easy but i havent found my setting yet and the settings i used with my multi watt duals sounded bad, this is like my 10th recto but only my 2nd triple and i think the triples sound a little different. i got my first triple about 12 or 13 yrs ago and havent played one since i sold that amp 2 yrs later. I usually buy dual rects.
Theres also a chance that something could be wrong with the amp because it wasnt packed very good and the box looked like it was thrown around a bit.
