The thing that really sucks is having to pay more money. I got it open box at SW for $350 off. The guy said it was open box and not used so I figured I would be fine. If I swap I have to pay $350. I have no idea how much it would cost me to ship to Mesa. (with no guarantee there is in fact something wrong with it)

So yeah tough spot for me with this.

They always say that. LOL. :D

Unless it was used for a in-store demo... which is not likely as these amps have been out for awhile. Someone probably bought and returned it. Shipping stuff back and forth across the US is not the best thing for tube amps in general. Sweetwater does do a good job though and usually adds more packing in the form of the big industrial green bubble wrap... but sh!t happens.

They'll pay for the return shipping and I'd pay the extra $350 for piece of mind. Shipping back and forth to Mesa will easily be $150... so at most you're spending an extra $200... if not less.

Yeah. Got my 4x12.

Even worse. Something is definitely wrong with the amp. Same thing as before but now it went as far as cutting out and everything.

It’s going back.

Oh shit man! Yeah, ship this thing back as soon as possible. Now it's clear that there is something wrong with the amp, nothing to do with the early break-up thing that i thought.

Yeah is really a shame and a pita lol.

I agree with your logic though and tbh I would have bet money the early breakup was the case because that was the symptom.

I honestly couldn’t believe it when I plugged in. I’m gonna fire it up one last time tomorrow to double check since I only got a very short amount of time but yeah, with what I heard tonight I’m certain something is seriously wrong.

Oh well, I’m going to get a new one and pay the difference. That sucks but not the end of the world, the amp sounds great when it is working at low volume and now I’m kind of curious if a new one is going to sound even better.

Anyway they seem to be pretty consistent in sound, when working properly.

Just asking; do you have a local tech who could troubleshoot this? If it saves you any money; I.e.: shipping etc..? Might be an easy fix. And negotiate a little refund.. that amp should be a beast if running properly.

Unfortunately I don’t know many.

There’s a place by here but they would want like a month to do it and there is one uninsured guy working out of his garage that could probably do it but I’m not willing to do that.

Just gonna see what Sweetwater says and sell a couple of pedals to offset the difference on a new one.

Wife had be a little paranoid asking if I could even return it. I looked at Sweetwater’s site and I found a page that says they do not accept returns on used items. This however was listed as open box. Not used, not a demo but open box.

I would be extremely pissed off if they sold me a broken amp and refused to take it back. I don’t think that’s going to happen but will see. I’ll email them later today and worse case scenario I’ll pay to ship it to Mesa.

You can check Mesa's site for an authorized tech in your area if you want to keep that $350 or if SW gives you any shit.

Yeah, if SW won't wake it back, just send it in to Mesa and they will fix it...

I would not recommend using a local tech after the experience that I had with my local Mesa authorized service center. Even after talking to Mesa, best thing would be to just ship it to them. Shipping there from FL was $65, and shipping back to me was $45 with Mesa's shipping discount.

Not a bad idea at all.

Honestly that is not bad at all. I am near St. Louis so even closer.

How long ago was this and how did you ship? I was expecting it to be double that.

That sucks having a bad experience with an authorized tech. You would think they know what they are doing.

I've shipped lots of amps to Mesa for service, including a new C+ that got there yesterday. UPS ground from CO is about $40. They only need the chassis & the tubes. Just send it back & let them do their job under warranty.

My shipping to Mesa happened last year. I had to ship my Mark IV to them twice for the same issue. Second time, they decided to replace all of the OD caps in the amp. Wish they had done it the first time, but they were super apologetic about me having to ship it back twice in one year.

I agree...figured the authorized service center would know what they were doing. They had my amp for 10 weeks before I decided to call Mesa. I got no responses for them, so arrange to ship it out. When I picked it up, it had more problems than when I dropped it off. 10 fucking weeks. Never again. I will ALWAYS ship my Mesas to Mesa. Its worth it.

Final update.

I tested one last time before packing up the amp to send back and posted a video. The hommie Dave said I have a bad pre amp tube.

I literally just replaced them all with brand new tubes after noticing an issue to rule that out as an issue. I figured whatever, I have to put the Mesa tubes back in anyway so sure let’s check it out.

Literally the first tube I swapped was the bad one. So stoked right now. Full gain, full volume. Noob of the year.

I am guessing one of the Mesa pres was bad to begin with but so was one of the replacements I put it.

That’s all I got. The Amp kills

Thank you all so much for the help throughout all of this. Really appreciated.

Funny how often it’s something little like that. In any event, I’m glad it looks like you dodged the bullet.

Title of the thread should be Tube amps, an emotional rollercoaster lol
