The Afwayus are huge sounding I have one you could buy from me cheap to try!
PM sent....... :D

And so it begins...

this is next week at your place:

Need more info on that amp under the pickups :D

The Afwayu to me is thicker than the aldrich and has more growl. Cool pickup.

I am always amazed about how many pickup and effects pedal options there are, it is mind blowing sometimes....

Not my amp, just a googled photo, but this is a link to the amps specs if that helps at all:

Man...I been on a EMG "snob" kick for the past 10 years....
if it wasnt EMG'S....it was WEAK!!
Today opened my eyes....... :aww:

Start with the Motor City Solution, your quest just might end there. The vibe of the EMG without any of the drawbacks. Your VH4 will pay you back in spades for it.

Passive is where its at

+10000 Solutions FTW

I have been an EMG snob myself for years. Go with the Solutions Dan they kick ass!
Afwayus are similar to me but alot more bottom end.

My biggest worries with the Passives is that they will FLUB out during the heavy chugging.
I dont drop lower than D....so I should be fine.
Got the Afwayus and its going into the Diezel VH4S....so I think I should be in good hands.
The EMG has always been a metal monster....but its like a ROBOT with a sterile voice. Where that Aldrich had GROWL and bite to the tone. Made that amp REALLY OPEN UP!!

The good passives (MCP,WCR,BKP etc) will NOT flub out with the heavy chug.

The Afwayu is a great place to start. Really nice mid-range snarl and a huge tight bottom end.

Something else to try is a MCP 2nd Degree Blackbelt. Output is 9.6K but man I can still play the heavy stuff with authority on this pickup. Definately more open sounding than Afwayu. This and the Detroiter are my favorite pickups of all time, and I've tried a number of the boutiques. Totally worth the time taken to experiment!

I always wanted to have 2 guitars. One with actives and another with passive.
Owned so many electrics thru the years. Down to one player.
Want to streamline the rig to just that and a kick ass amp.....then PLAY!! :D
Never going to think its going to be that easy! ;)

The suhr I played yesterday had Nickle covers on the Aldrich pickups.
Does that make a huge difference on the tone?
Or more cosmetic?

It does make a difference thought huge might be exaggerating a little bit, the pickup will be a tad warmer.

Ok....so I heard the Aldrich pickup yesterday thru my rig and was FLOORED!
Made my EMG's sound like crap!
they werent as "metal" as the EMG's but the Bite and Growl was incredible.
So I ended up getting a MCP Afwayu from a forum member here.(Thanks Jeff!!)
And been digging around some old threads and came across this comparison from Luxxtone:

"OK, so I'm testing the Aldrich and the Afwayu right now. Man these pickups are very similar in a lot of ways. The drive and output are almost equal. Each one pushes the amp about the same as far as distortion and sustain.

The Afwayu seems to have a little more bass and a more solid tone. Again, the differences are pretty slight..but this is what I'm hearing right now. It seems like the Afwayu is a little more ballsier, with a little more low mids than the Aldrich. More dry sounding and the notes create a big wall of sound but still ultra clear with note definition.

The Aldrich is a hair brighter, and has a bit more upper mids. It's a little more cutting sound and more up-front. Seems like the compression comes more from the upper mids in the Aldrich, and more in the lower mids in the Afwayu. The Afwayu is a little more mean sounding, and the Aldrich is more forward and slightly brighter. The Aldrich may come thru a little more in a band setting because of the mids, but I haven't tested in a band situation. The Afwayu cleans up better when rolling down the volume, stays cleaner and clearer longer until you roll all the way up

Like I said, these pickups are very much in the same vein...I'm really trying to point out the subtle differences. Also, this is coming from an alder super strat with a standard Fender type trem thru a Soldano Avenger with KT66's....could sound very different in your personal guitar and amp. Dave Friedman is doing a few tweaks to my Brown Eye Marshall...so it's in the shop and not available!

I'd say if you have one of these pickups already, you'd also love the other because they are similar and kinda do the same thing really well and sound awesome. Meaner= Afwayu, Cutting=Aldrich. That's my 2 cents! P.S., both are in stock at Luxxtone...... "
Now I couldnt be happier reading this!!!!

Looking forward to the results maybe this will finally sway me from the JB's.

No kidding, that was a cool review, thanks for re-posting it. I already know the Aldrich sounds cool, but now I'm kinda interested in the Afwayu...

Unless you just want to try a new pickup, if you're already into JBs perhaps try an A8 in it before you yank it; they're supposed to be quite cool (described as having a little less of the "nasal" mid-spike people either love or hate, tighter bass and more pleasing highs) and that would cost ya like $6 plus shipping... ;)

I had the same concern myself before i switched from EMGs over to BKP. I used an 81/60 or 81/85 combo for probably 5 or 6 years straight until this past summer when i broke down and bought a BKP Painkiller. I have it in a Caparison Horus that's tuned to drop B and no flub or anything through my powerball/recto/fortin :D

Thanks for sharing on that. You know how it is when an EMG user...."NOTHING IS MORE METAL!!"
But the TONE that I heard from that Aldrich blew me away. I started ripping out some old school Dokken and it never sounded better!
Cant wait to get the Afwayu!!!
Sounds like its made for me. ;)

This is for a new guitar I am building so I will have to buy a new pick-up anyways..
I have mainly stayed with the same body material and pick-ups except a couple X2N's.
Just looking in to maybe trying a different pick-up I can always go back...

X2Ns kick ass  I'm using them in the bridge and neck of a V that I have I'm pretty impressed

Cool. Would be interested to hear about the wood choice, etc. I've built all of mine, and am extremely meticulous about every detail, specific nut width, fret size, etc...but that's another thread. Since I switched back from EMGs, have just been trying Duncans, but wouldn't mind trying something else.

The JB8 is supposed to be like a JB "one louder"...besides blades vs. polepieces, isn't an X2N similar to a regular JB as far as the magnet (A5 in the JB at least...) and wind? They both get the rep of the mid-spike that people either love or describe as "Icepicky"....

Haha yeh the funny thing when I used them on certain guitars while still using the JB's on the others, All of them were the same wood.
Some people would say the X2N guitars sounded better, But when I told them what pick-up it was they would back track

Alder body guitars always seemed to suit me best and gel with how I play..

Musikraft is a couple Miles down the road from me, And the guy that I started using for repairs carries the Musikraft Jamerson or JamesCo guitars???
I think they are demo guitars so that you can test out their product quality along with sound comparisons with the difference in wood materials and ect..
They all have no paint so you can see the wood used and ect to...
After playing most of them I was like fuck these are nice and the quality is top notch..
Them being down the road from me and being a U.S. Made product how can I not support that since I want a new guitar..
So I am going to build a guitar with their product.

You are probably right about the JB & X2N being similar
The Mid spike and Icepicky tone I do Not get probably because Tone wise with amp settings I use less Mids & Presence...
But I have never had a problem with that Myth of not cutting through the mix so maybe the pick-ups contributed to that...

Haha dam maybe I should just get an X2N
