Please tell me about Mesa badlander

Thinking of buying triple recto RI or badlander. I heard badlander sits between recto and jcm800. Far from wall of sound like traditional recto. Some people say badlander sounds thin. I have ENGL oversized cab with EVM12Ls. So, lack of lowend might not be a problem to me. What do you think??

They aren't really comparable, even though it seems like they would be.

The badlander is much more thin, sharp, marshally, and detailed in the midrange. It's its own thing.

The RI from what everyone says is like the perfect recto, like a rev C or whatever the fairy dust revisions are. It's got a huge low end, with all the benefits and drawbacks that entails.

Get the RI if you want the rectifier tone, get the badlander if you want a more aggressive, slightly darker version of a modded marshall. They both sound good but they sound so different you shouldn't really be shopping for both of these at the same time trying to compare them.

It 100% is. It's honestly so different it shouldn't even be called a rectifier.

I think they sound fantastic but they aren't tonally even close to a normal recto.

It's a lot more sculpted but it's not a bad amp at all. It has that signature Recto high-end sizzle but it's more Marshall in the lowend; punchy but focused and leaner than a typical Recto.

NP. It's very much "the producer's amp" imho. It can fit a mix without crazy post-EQ moves, doesn't have too much of the problematic frequencies. Does feel like it lacks a bit of lowend when playing but it's dependent on the cabinet. With a Mesa OS or a Mesa 2x12 Recto cabs it punches like a donkey in the room.

Yeah, modern LoG album's guitar tone is why I am eyeing on badlander.

Any recto crushes the BL for heavy tones, to me the BL is narrow and feels kinda anemic. I haven’t owned one though so if I had more time with it maybe it would change my mind. It seems like it might be good in a live mix situation which is where certain rectos can suddenly feel mushy and lost. The RI is great though and doesn’t run into that problem as much.

When I was researching the amp, a lot of owners complained it didn't have enough gain and it was too dry but I don't find the amp to be like that at all, including the crunch channel. I tried the Mr. Scary mod with the amp as well and it made it funner to play feel wise but I honestly don't think the amp really needs it. Just my opinion.

Yeah - I don't enjoy it with the Mr. Scary as much as I do with a OCD-style boost (18V) in front if I need it to go extreme. It has enough gain for most styles & can be boosted for more imho. Unlike other amps, the Gain knob has a full usable sweep - I think that's also part of the perceived issue most folks report because they may be used to other circuits where the Gain doesn't need to be pushed past noon for instance.

All good info here about the Badlander.

One thing I would say about it, if you are somebody who boost everything all the time. You have to be careful. First, It doesn’t necessarly need it and it’s already a very modern and agressive amp. A boost could be too much with it.

As previous post: it can be full soundwise (with the right cab) but it won’t have a big Wall of sound like a typical recto. The recto agressiveness is there with a tighter bottom.

I would say it’s tighter, more like my Rev D than my Rev F.

A Mesa Rectifier through EVM12L's in a 2x12 or 4x12 is a killer recipe for metal. Bold, articulate, and with incredibly taut and punchy lowend on tap. If anything I think the EV's frame the lowend of a Rectifier better than any Celestion I ever played one through in an aggressive metal musical context. The don't tame it, but they focus it and use all its power to punch versus fart out and get mushy/muddy.

Through the more Marshally 6550 loaded poweramp it was brutally tight, and if not dialed in right could get borderline too tight and clinical for some stuff, but depending on your tastes it could be perfect.
