Order if care factor (guitar only or Prince would be first by a mile)

Keith
Prince
Kurt Cobain
The Edge

They are all songwriters most importantly. Keith though as a guitar player actually did some really cool stuff and I consider him very, very good. Not technically, but his playing is in no doubt great. So I’m not basing this on ā€œsong-writingā€ etc. Just playing.

Prince I would rate as pretty cool guitarist. Unfortunately for me his While My Guitar Gently Weeps performance has been so overrated, I have become repelled by the over blowing of his skills.

Cobain should never rank highly in this top
100 guitarist polls and that annoys me. Did some reasonable stuff.

The Edge I’m probably being harsh on, but the stupid beanie hat, the annoying imitators, the references to him in every delay demo and the fact that U2 annoy me puts him last.

ā€œTechnicallyā€ most guitarists even on YouTube are better than them.

ya know, that's a good point. I might underrate him, just because that annoyed the shizzle out of me.

It amazes me how normal non-guitarists are blown away by those kind of performances. Like they aren’t actually listening. Yet if I was to show them this, they would not even care. Maybe it’s TOO well played, that they think it’s too easy? Or prerecorded? I don’t know. But man, Vai was on fire here AND put on a theatrical performance.

Keith is extremely underrated as a player. Sure you can easily figure out the notes he plays. But to cop how he plays them rhythmically is tough..and that’s where the Stones classics live and breath. In their rhythm. I scoffed at him coming up but guys like him and Ron (Faces era) are hard to get right to where it feels the same.

Dude, don't even get me started. I have a group of friends, that think Trey is the greatest gift to musicians. Please don't go there.

wrote when he was 16?

I did my first blues jam the other night. I spend a lot of time playing leads over backing tracks at home. Realised real quick my rhythm playing, where I’d stab the chords, everything was absolute amateur hour.

Like, even ā€œgoodā€ rhythm players aren’t that good. When someone can get in the pocket and make things jump out at just the right time. That’s what separates the boys from the men. I let the hair on my chest fool me. I’m just a boy still 😢.

My cover band plays literal hours of entire sets of stones songs, and i "play" keef, so i feel like i'm pretty well qualified to say that you're correct that people don't play them rhythmically correct - but that isn't because he's an amazing player, it's because he's sloppy as shit LOL

Listen Keith is an amazing songwriter, but that isn't what anyone means when they say "guitar player", they mean technical skills, and that's apples and oranges

Ron, however, that's a different story, that guy is an amazing songwriter AND an amazing guitar player

didn’t prince play most of the instruments on his recordings?

I hope you could do what he could do given he most likely spent a small amount of his time practicing guitar.

What a shit pissing contest this is who gives a fuck.

Lots of folks can learn & recite Prince guitar parts. But when it comes the whole package writing, arranging, singing, choreographing, & showmanship, recording every instrument songs as a teenager that people still listen to almost 50 years later; few people will ever come close.

Then after the show, go dominate a basketball match and serve everyone pancakes.

I would smoke any guitarist if I had a JAMES TYLER.

@SmuggNorris feels the same about his private reserves as long as he also has access to a quality pair of tan slacks and a vintage Dumble.

I’d agree with this…. And say technical playing is technical…. Sloppy playing is harder to emulate because it’s slightly off time, wiffed notes, slurred shit…. Interesting thread. Jimmy page, angus young, keef. And others from that time are tricky….. maybe the deal back then was to play off so not one could do what you do…. Idk.

I tend to play pretty slow, because as we all know, you can't hear the glorious tones coming out of high dollar vintage amps if you play too fast.

True that. The crystal scaffolding is much more present than the lattice when notes are sustained longer.
