Quickrod or JVM?

Axe-Man, thanks for the detailed reply about the ceriatone. It definitely sounds like a killer amp, and I hope you find some time to record some clips! Im sure there are many others on here who would like to hear that amp too.

In the meantime, Im gonna keep my eyes on the classifeids and see what pops up! I saw both a quickrod and a jvm on there for very decent prices. Sooo tempting!

Thanks everyone for their input!

I use a GCX and it makes my QR a five-channel amp (Clean, 2nd Gear OD1/2, 3rd Gear OD1/2) plus solo boost.

I swear, my buddy's JVM must be the biggest piece of crap I've ever heard because it sound like a fizzy fuzzy flubby mess compared to my QR

I'd like to get your guy's settings. I've played with his amp alot and I for the life of me can't get it to sound good at all. He has Marshall 4x12's with Marshall 'Vintage' speakers. I believe he sets his FX loop at 100% wet and uses a TimeFactor and a few other pedals

I swear, when I hear all the love for the JVM I go   because I'm just not hearing it

My thoughts arent because Im a Splawn fanboy either. I appreciate all good sounding amps so don't throw that at me :gethim:

I'm with you. I really really want to like the JVM, but every time I try I cannot get a decent tone out of it that I like - outside of the clean with reverb or maybe OD1 Green :aww:

I was in this same boat 4 or 5 years ago. I went up to the House of Guitars in Rochester with my guitar and spent some time with the JVM and it sounded really good. The 4-channel flexibility was nice. Something in my gut told me to go with the Quickrod (even though I didn't play it first) and I'm glad I did. The QR sounded fantastic and I'm guessing it's built more solid. The guy who works on my amps doesn't like my Splawns' tone but he said they're well built.

Also the Splawns aren't too crazy expensive new ($1850) but they're a steal used.

John Nau working on your amps?

...

Yeah.

Hey, are you the guy that used to be in Lethargy? If so, didn't know you were still in town. That was a great band (and I'm not even a metal guy).

Here's the bottom line. I've heard JVMs that sound like ass. I've never heard a bad-sounding Splawn, even when I was screwing around with tubes like putting KT88s in my Nitro. Can't go wrong with Splawn, and built in USA!!!

Played and owned both and would say the JVM is the better amp. Not close. That said, don't care for either one.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAA ok there sparky.

Lethargy did rule. Half of them went off and formed Mastodon (which is no where near as good as Lethargy was). That is Erik who was in Lethargy. He is the singer/other guitar player for my band Sulaco. He is also currently in Brutal Truth and Nuclear Assault.

Its all about personal preference Vlad and I happen to share his views( with the exception that I LOVE the JVM)...

I will say this though, The JVM needs some work out of the box; Better tubes, hotter bias. To me, the JVM outshines in Tone,Feel and Versatility. I was able to get some good tone out of the QR with an OD and that helped the feel a bit but in the end, I still liked the JVM better.

Ive heard great clips with the QR, theres a bunch of great tones on Curts CD. All I can say is that ya gotta sit down with both and use what works for ya. I dont see how asking for opinions is going to help an individual make a decision on something that only they can figure out with their own ears and fingers..

Quickrod. I thought the JVM was a piece of junk...just my $.02 ;)

So you guys are going to make me write a serious reply....

JVM:
Sounds good at really low volumes
Has alot of features
Easy to play

Splawn QR:
Sounds incredible turned up (needs help at super low volumes)
Built like a brick shit house
Made in the USA with custom tolex etc available
Cheaper than the JVM

Yes the QR is an unforgiving amp. Some folks say it's stiff, but that's because it's not compressed. It's a wide open-sounding amp. I usually throw an OD808 in front of mine and I'm perfectly content. As a matter of fact, I've been playing a Splawn QR since 2007 and it's been my go-to amp.

There ya go... Take your "Splawn Police" and shove it in your gaped anus...

Who the fuck knows... lol :D
All I know is if it's a Splawn thread and I post in it with my opinion the "Splawn Police" comment gets whipped out. I don't give a flying fuck what the OP buys. Ultmately, he'll have to play both amps for himself and make the determination.

Now... I need to go grind up some chicken heads for Tweed's suppository.

Hey Kage,

Yes I did own a Quickrod and Nitro at one time, and a JVM 410H as well.

The Splawns were good amps. Well built, just not for me. I wouldn't mind trying one of the newer revised models they keep changing over time.

I was never a member of the Splawn Police though.

I love beak bits! They give me grating mids! :D
