Funny u post this cuz I was thinking this the other day. Kirk's vid was some bad tones going on, and choptone's was great. Not knocking Kirk, he has more chips than me and more money. I just don't think his own amp highlights his playing very well.

this cracks me up, you are comparing kirks video to the other one  ...kirk is play raw by himself and the other one is a studio recording with processing and production

apples/ oranges?

Not a great demo of an amp sound-wise and Kirk's playing is just generally shoddy as usual, PLUS his guitar is obviously out of tune on the low string chugging.

Yeah, yeah; he's got more money, where's my multi-million selling band and signature gear etc... etc..., but he never sounds ANYTHING but amateurish to me.

Yeah, comparing both videos is indeed silly. The guy makes it sound generic and boring, while Kirk makes it sound world class. that said, I am not crazy about the sound of the amp in general. Kirk mixes this with a dual rectifier.

I wonder if they are ditching their Axe FX setup's and going back to amps live?

I played one at GC, it was meh, at best. Conversely, I plugged into the Friedman BE right next to it and was happy to play all day long. It may be apples to oranges, but that amp is pretty expensive to not sound better.

I always thought they might have started to use AxeFX to save shipping costs on tour after that film they did and the Orion festivals lost them millions. Maybe they're back in the black a little bit now?

I played it GC....Not bad, but not really impressive either. There are probably better options at that price.

Actually, I expected far worse. I like to bag on Kirk like the rest of them BUT I have come to understand that he is essentially like an akward teenager and his playing will always be what it is. He's a surfer kid just having a good time and he means well. Whatever his limitations, he certainly did bring enough to the table to do a good job from Kill Em All up to And Justice so we have to give him some credit. His playing fit the style back then. Now though, agreed, horrible.

Rythmically, the amp sounds like it stays tight in the low end and does what you would want it to do for the Metallica sound. I am not a fan of that sound but it seems to do it well here. Lead wise, sounds like a bit of the nasally misd are pushed which are perfect for Kirk because 99.9% of the time he is on his wah anyway. All in all, I would not buy the amp but maybe a Metallica nuthugger would.

He seems like a genuinely cool guy and god knows how many kids have got into playing guitar through his solos on those essential Metallica records. The Choptone vids definitely do the amp so much more justice (No pun intended), than his own playing on that vid does!

I have no problem with the guy, except for the damn Wah Wah pedal

lol.......yeah the mighty Metallica were in financial trouble after that film & the Orion festival so they went with the AFXII to avoid eating Ramen Noodles

Kirk is just making endorsement money by selling a new signature amp. Nothing wrong with that..........don't read anything more into it.

You'll still see them with their AFXII's live.........they actually love the consistency in tone they get from them every night.

Was just a guess really, but I read they lost literally millions and touring was the only thing keeping them financially afloat - they're ALWAYS on the road, so a bit of cost cutting by shipping lighter gear wouldn't surprise me.

Seriously, how terrible was that movie?? What did they think would happen with that? It iwas essentially swallowing the cost of a movie shoot plus a regular live show interleaved. It was beyond bad as a concept. Who is the genius that thought of that one I wonder.

I tried one at a GC too and thought it sounded worse than "not bad"

sadly they aren't the only band to fall into the "make a real movie" trap ... hopefully they will be the last :D
