5 posts in and we're already at the cunt and prick mark. Nicely done.

I think relic'ing is bollocks.

Just out of curiousity Mo, are any of your Lesters relic'ed? Murphy aged? Brothel beaten?

To me, the word poser always had more to do with whether someone could play or not, rather than the guitar they played.

And to me, it means somebody who places form over function, regardless of their talent level. MAB is a technically amazing player but I don't think too many people would argue that he's not a poser. Same with Vai IMO, although to a lesser degree.

FWIW, I owned one of the first Fender Strat relics back in '97. I hated the idea of it then as well, but the guitar played and sounded like a dream so I overlooked the form (which I hated) in order to get the function that I desired (a great feeling. playing, sounding Strat). I still ended up selling it when I got my first Anderson...there was simply no comparison across the board.

BTW, there are no "right" or "wrong" answers here...just opinions.

I wanted a luxxtone. I heard they were awesome players. I got one and it is relic'd. it plays so nice, great action, sounds good, and I could care less if it is relic'd or not. it kicks all kinds of ass. I would have got it if it was relic's or not. I certainly don't think someone is a poser, and most certainly not a "cunt!" I don't know why someone would care if someone else plays a relic'd guitar, so much so to start a thread basically putting them down. if you don't like them, you don't have to buy one, I am sure they will sell just fine with out your business. the music zoo relic'd charvels are bad ass!!!

None.

Fact is I have to pay MORE for "gloss" finish than the standard VOS which always kinda irks me.... Especially considering the "gloss" is straight off the line, and the VOS requires more labour.

I'm pretty open minded but I definitely don't prefer relic'd women.

I agree.

Usual disclaimer: Not that there's anything wrong with collecting and not playing the instrument.

Agreed, no right or wrong. I don't consider MAB a poser, I just don't dig much of what he plays (although I dug some of the Randy tribute stuff). To me, anyone who has put in the time that guy has to achieve the technique he has can't be considered a poser. I have too much respect for the level of commitment required to achieve what he has whether I like his music or not because I recognize that is completely subjective...

It's called sharing opinions...I thought that's what we did here? Who here stated that they cared what somebody else played?

I have this Nash on the way which I am hoping is killer, I would much rather buy an old guitar but don't have the $$$ for say a real 57 goldtop that has turned green like a Murphy. I like how relic'd maple necks feel, and Luxxtone is making just killer relic'd guitars. That being said this would be my only relic'd guitar though someday I hope to have a luxx !

Hey whatever you like get it....lifes too short to worry what other people think

This really is the answer.

I dig relics....especially done well, but relics of all kinds. Cracks me up that the guy writing the article putting down relics admits to owning two himself. I dig the Luxxtones, I dig when guys do it themselves, I dig all the HM stuff I've seen/played, and I like the Fender CS heavy relics. I'm a busy guy and don't play 50 gigs a year. Also could care less what anyone thinks of my jeans or furniture or my guitars. When someone else pays for them, they get a say...interesting seeing who on here likes em and doesn't though.

I really don't see any difference in doing that and painting your guitar exactly the same as EVHs, or modding an amp to try and get someone else's sound cause you dig it. People wanna be like their heroes.

I wouldn't pay more to get the guitar relic-ed, but i don't mind if i get a used one that already is

Toupee's
Rubber boobs
Loud exhaust pipes on a stock engine
Relic'd guitars
stuffing a sock in your pants

It's all the same.

Searchin a good but reasonable priced Strat I've stumbled over this Road Worn thing. Tested it against several other Strats and it won the contest - by far. For sure one of the reasons is the "worn" neck. It just feels better.

I agree re: the use of the term "poseur".

I will add to it that a ridiculous, "over the top" stage presence displayed by a guitarist can make him/her a "poseur" as well.
Not if they can play. For example, I'd never consider Vai a poser, no matter how much he prances in front of his fans. The guy is a bad M'fer and will always have my respect.

Of course, this is coming from a guy who has a picture of himself onstage in black and white fishnet spandex pants and a ton of makeup in his avatar, so YMMV. ;)

Also, I have no problem with well-heeled beginner guitarists with PRS Private Stock guitars, Dumble amps and Klon Centaurs either. What the hell do I care what folks spend their hard earned cash on. If you have the spare coin, knock yourself out. There is no minimum playing ability required for someone to buy expensive gear, folks... I wish a bunch of rich beginners would buy Cherry Bombs right now! ;)

Steve

Yeah, for sure. We had a thread here a while back and people calling the guys in Avenged Sevenfold poseurs. Now, you may not like their whole Shtick, but there's no denying that those boys can play and are very technical players. Doesn't make sense to me that because they wear skinny jeans and guyliner they are poseurs (is that spelling right?). Skill wise they are some bad MFers. You'd think there would be a little respect from the music community because they have a technical style in a mainstream situation. Something you don't see that often
