I think relic'ing is bollocks.
Just out of curiousity Mo, are any of your Lesters relic'ed? Murphy aged? Brothel beaten?

And to me, it means somebody who places form over function, regardless of their talent level. MAB is a technically amazing player but I don't think too many people would argue that he's not a poser. Same with Vai IMO, although to a lesser degree.sah5150":1h313i9e said:To me, the word poser always had more to do with whether someone could play or not, rather than the guitar they played.

Agreed, no right or wrong. I don't consider MAB a poser, I just don't dig much of what he plays (although I dug some of the Randy tribute stuff). To me, anyone who has put in the time that guy has to achieve the technique he has can't be considered a poser. I have too much respect for the level of commitment required to achieve what he has whether I like his music or not because I recognize that is completely subjective...rupe":3bn2ojjg said:And to me, it means somebody who places form over function, regardless of their talent level. FWIW, I owned one of the first Fender Strat relics back in '97. I hated the idea of it then as well, but the guitar played and sounded like a dream so I overlooked the form (which I hated) in order to get the function that I desired (a great feeling. playing, sounding Strat). I still ended up selling it when I got my first Anderson...there was simply no comparison across the board.
BTW, there are no "right" or "wrong" answers here...just opinions.
It's called sharing opinions...I thought that's what we did here? Who here stated that they cared what somebody else played?mooncobra":20j2qg72 said:I don't know why someone would care if someone else plays a relic'd guitar, so much so to start a thread basically putting them down. if you don't like them, you don't have to buy one, I am sure they will sell just fine with out your business.

I agree re: the use of the term "poseur".
I will add to it that a ridiculous, "over the top" stage presence displayed by a guitarist can make him/her a "poseur" as well.
Of course, this is coming from a guy who has a picture of himself onstage in black and white fishnet spandex pants and a ton of makeup in his avatar, so YMMV.
Also, I have no problem with well-heeled beginner guitarists with PRS Private Stock guitars, Dumble amps and Klon Centaurs either. What the hell do I care what folks spend their hard earned cash on. If you have the spare coin, knock yourself out. There is no minimum playing ability required for someone to buy expensive gear, folks... I wish a bunch of rich beginners would buy Cherry Bombs right now!
