Old enough that it is quite possible I fathered a large portion of the members over at Harmony Central which may explain their violent hatred for the whole "hair metal/cock rock" scene they rage about about. They are probably still mad at their moms for attending all those shows back on the Sunset Strip.

You know - someone would post a backing track or drum track or whatever and we'd all create something over it. 20 or more people would participate. It was fun to create something and also listen to other people's wildly different interpretations. Man I dug it. We'd get into all types of tone, technique and mixing discussions based on this. Even if I hadn't jammed one because I didn't have the time, I'd listen and enjoy the takes that were done. These jams were a lot of the basis for the friendships I formed here and originally at HCAF. There have been a few attempts to get this going again, but nothing has caught on. Wish we could get that going again. Seems much more gear function oriented here now and less about the playing. Most guys here, I've never even heard play and it was opposite before. This is a key missing element that has led to less community, but it's all of our faults for not participating when people have tried to get something going...

This is one of the things I became disappointed about too. We had the jams early on here but when only the same 3 people join in on the jams they tend to stop.
Hey Guys,
Little known fact, I found Rig Talk myself because I heard Bobs Bogner clips and thought they were killer and tracked him down here on early RT to try to hear more. It was all about finding the best tone and players for me as well in coming here. It has evolved into my whole life now but it didn't start that way. As far as playing skills I have always said I am at best a hobbyist and nothing special at all, I know what good tone sounds like and I have lots of experience with what gear sounds like what but as far as shredding it up like Steve Vai I am just not that talented in that department but I know what I like. (I know the comment above from Curt was not about me but just saying). I am going to start a new thread tomorrow with a Suggestion Box type of vibe for you guys to make constructive comments on how I can make things around here a little cooler than they might be now. I can't do everything everyone might like but I will certainly try to make it better within my ability and skills.
Brad
I think the whole point of Bob and my comments that you quoted was that it is OUR fault, not YOURS. In order to make the jams happen, we have to participate and comment on each other's takes. That is what leads to discussion, etc. A lot is up to us as a community to make things as vibrant and cool as they used to be...

I hear ya man, and you're right, there is variety here. I just don't think that there is as much as there used to be years ago when I joined. And yes Mentoneman has some mighty tasty clips, bastard made me buy a Replex. I don't regret itIndyWS6":pa3houbs said:There tends to be an 80's vibe at times, which suits me just fine, but that's certainly not all there is to see or hear. I think that part of the reason this place gets stereotyped as an 80's music joint is the clips that are typically used to demo modded Marshall's. Those tunes are well suited for showcasing those tones and they tend to get used frequently.
Some of the best clips I've heard on here were far removed from 80's tones. Mentoneman has clips of a rig that has cleans with reverbs and delays that are simply glorious (I think it was his - hope I gave credit where it was due...), there are a number of clips of face-melting metal and just about everything in-between. Long story short, I think the perception that this is strictly an 80's music forum is unwarranted. There's something here for everyone.

Agree 100%
Pat (Mentoneman) does some of the best demos around, and/because he knows tone, and how to get it, AND how to capture it on video/audio, and da boi's got chops 2.![]()

I mean it's cool and you like what you like but even though I'm a child of the 80's I can't stand 99% of that stuff. So I'd rather not read about it nor argue with anyone with the opposite opinion. Like I said, I'm not throwing stones..... It's cool if you are all about the weedly weedly guitar but not me. Plus I'm busier than ever....I still lurk from time to time though...![]()
