Heh... Not even. You should have seen me 8-10 years ago.

We have all mellowed in our old age. Thank God huh? Man, we used to light stuff up on forums! Now I feel like Al Bundy talking about the time he scored 4 touchdowns in one game in high school.

Isn't that the truth.

Old enough that it is quite possible I fathered a large portion of the members over at Harmony Central which may explain their violent hatred for the whole "hair metal/cock rock" scene they rage about about. They are probably still mad at their moms for attending all those shows back on the Sunset Strip.

A gentleman never tells his age, but I have a '66 strat that is from the year of my birth. :D

I had to take off my shoes to help with the math and STILL couldn't count high enough.

Agreed, you could still buy 1963 split window corvette's brand new when I was born.......If it wasn't for hair coloring I'd be old.

I also used to love the forum jams. You know - someone would post a backing track or drum track or whatever and we'd all create something over it. 20 or more people would participate. It was fun to create something and also listen to other people's wildly different interpretations. Man I dug it. We'd get into all types of tone, technique and mixing discussions based on this. Even if I hadn't jammed one because I didn't have the time, I'd listen and enjoy the takes that were done. These jams were a lot of the basis for the friendships I formed here and originally at HCAF. There have been a few attempts to get this going again, but nothing has caught on. Wish we could get that going again. Seems much more gear function oriented here now and less about the playing. Most guys here, I've never even heard play and it was opposite before. This is a key missing element that has led to less community, but it's all of our faults for not participating when people have tried to get something going...

Steve

This is one of the things I became disappointed about too. We had the jams early on here but when only the same 3 people join in on the jams they tend to stop.

Hey Guys,

Little known fact, I found Rig Talk myself because I heard Bobs Bogner clips and thought they were killer and tracked him down here on early RT to try to hear more. It was all about finding the best tone and players for me as well in coming here. It has evolved into my whole life now but it didn't start that way. As far as playing skills I have always said I am at best a hobbyist and nothing special at all, I know what good tone sounds like and I have lots of experience with what gear sounds like what but as far as shredding it up like Steve Vai I am just not that talented in that department but I know what I like. (I know the comment above from Curt was not about me but just saying). I am going to start a new thread tomorrow with a Suggestion Box type of vibe for you guys to make constructive comments on how I can make things around here a little cooler than they might be now. I can't do everything everyone might like but I will certainly try to make it better within my ability and skills.

Brad
Hey Brad,

I think the whole point of Bob and my comments that you quoted was that it is OUR fault, not YOURS. In order to make the jams happen, we have to participate and comment on each other's takes. That is what leads to discussion, etc. A lot is up to us as a community to make things as vibrant and cool as they used to be...

Steve

+1. We pretty much have free reign on this forum to do what we want. It's more up to us than any one owner, moderator.

Too much all 80's butt rock all the time for me. There's always been that contingency here but it seems to rule the roost these days. Not enough diversity. I mean it's cool and you like what you like but even though I'm a child of the 80's I can't stand 99% of that stuff. So I'd rather not read about it nor argue with anyone with the opposite opinion. Like I said, I'm not throwing stones..... It's cool if you are all about the weedly weedly guitar but not me. Plus I'm busier than ever....I still lurk from time to time though... ;)

There tends to be an 80's vibe at times, which suits me just fine, but that's certainly not all there is to see or hear. I think that part of the reason this place gets stereotyped as an 80's music joint is the clips that are typically used to demo modded Marshall's. Those tunes are well suited for showcasing those tones and they tend to get used frequently.

Some of the best clips I've heard on here were far removed from 80's tones. Mentoneman has clips of a rig that has cleans with reverbs and delays that are simply glorious (I think it was his - hope I gave credit where it was due...), there are a number of clips of face-melting metal and just about everything in-between. Long story short, I think the perception that this is strictly an 80's music forum is unwarranted. There's something here for everyone.

Just my .02...

I hear ya man, and you're right, there is variety here. I just don't think that there is as much as there used to be years ago when I joined. And yes Mentoneman has some mighty tasty clips, bastard made me buy a Replex. I don't regret it ;)

Agree 100%

Pat (Mentoneman) does some of the best demos around, and/because he knows tone, and how to get it, AND how to capture it on video/audio, and da boi's got chops 2.

Nobody is stopping you or anybody else from tossing up some NON 80's butt rock weedly weedly clips....
I have heard some of the best heavy modern clips here than anywhere else.

Sorry bud, butt you need a new moniker and are a disgrace to the Nigel Tufnel legacy.

In any event, I think you're going to find that most gear/music based forums are going to have a predominant era and/or style amongst the groups. It's up to you to find ones that don't annoy you.

I prefered the hard rock and metal of the late 70's and early 80s and the "buttock" era of the mid 80's is about when I stopped gigging for a while, but along with the bad (like any era) it's hard to deny there was also plenty of good.

Agreed...many of the people who I interact with the most seem to be very infrequent visitors these days.
I've been busy taking deposits on the software I'm developing at my new company to fund the developers, hardware and software I need as well as to feed and house my family. Hey... we gotta eat, man! Hope there's a market!

On another note, I always "feel the love" at rig-talk. Haven't noticed any unusual drama myself...

Steve
How did you know that I was talking about you ;)

As for the 80's thing, yeah there's a bit of that but like others have said, there's so much more. Aside from Mentoneman I love the clips by Samtheman, Ed D, and others who are far from 80's shred heads.

I too miss the jams...Lugo's "Around the World" was the last thing I participated in and that was a couple years ago. Mark (Rockstah) recently posted up a great clip a few weeks back and I'm ashamed that I never got around to doing something with it but a new gig and move to a new house got in the way. We should all circle back and jump in on that one

I have been a member since day 1 and loved this place for years but lately it has become slow and boring, im tired of people kissing ass around here and especially towards brad. I think that makes people not wanna come here as much. Grow a set of balls and stop trying to suck brads or some amp dealers dicks.

Things have changed alot and i dont post nearly as much as i used to and its rare when i start a thread anymore, I also get tired of the stuck up attitude around here. Theres still some great people around here but theres plenty that arent.

This is also a annoying subject-
If its not a modded marshall then it sucks, you must be a new guy around here with little gear knowledge if you arent playing a friedman, fortin, or holy grail cameron.

Another thing that bugs me is everyday somebody mentions hcaf and how much more intelligent and mature you are, its old now and you guys need to stop comparing yourselves to hcaf and tgp.
So what if people like to be silly and joke with their friends, its just being relaxed and having fun.
They talk gear and theres plenty of great players over there that know as much or more about gear than you guys do, its lame to post everday that your so much more mature than those hcaf idiots. You sound like a bunch of old people that have no sense of humor and are uptight.

Rt is never gonna be the way it used to be, it has evolved now that brad owns it, but i know that he bought it and is making it the way he wants it.

Lots of sub forums on amp builders and advertising makes it seem like a shopping mall now.
The excitement is gone and its slower now, the old rig talk is dead and if we dont like what it has become then we should just adapt or leave.

Yeah cuz there is none of that on the other forums. At least you don't have to pay a friggin cover charge at the door here.
If this is a shopping mall then TGP must be a Sams Club where you have to pay just to get in the door to shop.
