I wasn't aware that silverbursts yellowed but based on the replies that must be normal. I'd have been pissed when I pulled it out and it wasn't silver. Go figure.

No, its not painted by some dirty hippy during an acid flashback, its a production model "Zoot Suit" Gibson. Or it can double as the Richard Simmons sig. model.

Oddly enough, as much as I've hates the way LPs play over the years, I'm really wanting one.

I'd rock that bad mammajamma.

Well, you are from SOCAL. Explains a lot.... :D

I didn't know George Michael had a sig LP. The rainbow makes sense now.

Showing my age I guess but its wild back in the day when i had my Vintage shop in the early 1990s we wouldn't buy those Silverbursrt Les Pauls as you couldn't give them away. They were typically heavy and everyone hated the color and they were from the Norlin years. Now everyone loves them and wants them...funny how that is.

  I have owned this 1979 silverburst since I was 17 (my grandma bought it for me used and it was my first good guitar). I too kinda felt that it was ugly (still do) but I absolutely love this guitar.

I sold my Silverburst LPC a couple of months ago, now I'm starting to regret it. It sold in 1 day.

I remember that one. I wonder why you did that?

Love them Silverbursts
**My dumb true story**
I went to GuitarWorks in Greenwood Indiana around 98' looking to pickup a
power amp. They had a 79' Silverburst and the price tag was $850, excellent
condition too and I played it for a bit, didn't even think of buying it.
The owner was there and saw me playing it and walked up and just said "$799 and she's yours".
He even offered to cover the tax!! Like an idiot I passed on it. He even said "Please
take it. It's been here forever, it's a rare LP Custom and they only made them for a
few years in that ugly burst color". I was a totaly schmuck and passed on it and just
said good luck selling it.

I did end up get'n one around 2001 and paid $1500.
A good deal considering what they're going for now.
My 82' with Robocase and all.

Whoa, whoa, whoa...I'm from So Cal too and I think this thing is definitely ugly. This design was pure inspirado from the bois out in San Francisco, NoHo, and Palm Springs...

The finish is clearly gone on that silverburst, time to sell it....... to me. :) :)

I wonder if the new silverbursts will age like these old ones will in color.

Well, they say it is the lead based auto paint that they used during the 79-82 period on these guitars that oxidizes and turns. The EPA fixed Gibson's use of lead based paints back when. So, I don't think the new ones will turn. Then again, this one's been cooking for 33 years.

New ones will yellow just like the originals. It's not the silver paint that yellows. It's the nitro clear coat. And every Gibson ever made with nitro clear coat will yellow all the same. There is also ZERO lead in the paint. Don't know how this myth got started. But it's not true. Check out any Gibson from the same years. The binding is yellow. But you won't notice a "greening" effect on the rest of the guitar if the guitar is black, obviously. But most of the white Customs from the 70's are yellow now.

If you peel away a bit of the clear coat on an original silver burst, you'll see the silver paint underneath is still as silver as the day it was sprayed. Pop open the control cavity or remove a pickup and you'll see the silver paint underneath is still silver. :)

Here are mine! :D '79 and '84
