So what Marshall should I be looking for?

Jmp's are great amps...and will do exactly what you want. JCM 800 2203 will give you what you need for crunch...but there are no clean tones in that amp. How about a JCM 900 SLX or JCM 800 2205?

I had a 2205 and a 2204 at the same time. Calling what the 2205 had a clean is a recipe for disappointment IMO. The "normal" channel could sound similar to the 2204, but not as fat. The "lead" channel picked up from there. I ended up selling the 2205, because I could get a better "clean" by rolling back on the volume knob w/ the 2204, and the gain sounded better.

Agreed...but he's looking for "Marshall Clean" which is why I mentioned it.

Ok Ralph, Chub, or any other LeTekro freak, what is he using on Seven Seas?? Can an earlier NMV JMP get me there?

Christ the harmonic at 1:30 is insane
Id use a 70's 2203 w 6550's and an SD-1 and a wah stuck in the middle....it got me there anyway.....when I saw him he was using a channel switching JCM 800....a stock NMV will not get that tone.

Yeah George, I am thinking that I want something between 1977 and 1979 JMP 100 watter but still need to research 4 holers. Perfect world I would buy both :D
My fave Marshalls were the Superlead / Plexis modded to the 2203 circuit and then tweaked from there. They don't sound great to me stock. The Superlead amps will get you closer to Jake E Lee, some of the later Lynch tones and more of a 70's rock vibe. They don't hold together on the bottom and can get muddy really easy. Some guys dig that.

The JMPs 2203 / JCM 800 2203's (same amp different cosmetics until they switched back to EL34's) are more "80's metal" sounding. I preferred the 6550 loaded models. They need all the help they can get for tightness. You can get a passable clean running into the low gain input, it bypasses a gain stage. Most guys I know will just roll back the gtr vol a bit for cleaner tones.

Some of the 2205/ 2210 channel switchers sounded great! We had one at GIT that was awesome. I was surprised.

You will end up with both at some point anyway...

Really suprised that you dont like the JVM. Maybe its just the way youve eq'd it....? i dont know but i think that is a KILLLLLER amp! ....almost as nice as my Diezel. My biggest issue is that it gets kinda thin at high volumes. But what i do about that is cut the treble way down to 9 oclockish (what i always do anyway) and give it a little more mids/bass. Channel 3 was my favorite. Channel 4 is too much.

Sup Rob,

Im positive that Scott loves his JVM. It just doesn't have that old Marshall roar that the older ones have and Im thinking that's what he wan't to add to teh collection. I can't speak for Scott(Digitaljams) but I'm pretty sure that the JVM isnt going anywhere. The Old marshall is more of an addition to the family. Im sure Scott will chime in.

FWIW, I still love the JVM

I love my JVM! Very very cool amp and you are right bro, that amp is going nowhere  I still have to screw around with Clean red and the crunch channels to find things.

Rob, I agree that OD1 starts to thin out a tad but like my Mesa I lower the treble some and try to bring some more mids out. OD2 is fun but I would not use it in any band context due to cymbal wash. Too compressed and lacks some cut for what I play.

Just want an old school Marshall as it is time

It is just the time to find a killer old Marshall for me,

Scott,
For Ronni Le Tekro tones, I think you can really come close to them with a MV, late 70's JMP or early 80's JCM800 either 50 or 100 watt. But, I will disagree with George here and say for Le Tekro, you want the EL-34's in it. Ronni's tone to me just epitomizes EL34 in early MV Marshalls. If you wanted Zakk tone, I'd say 6550's. The cleans on these amps are very average. So get a Duncan Custom, a Boss Od-1 or even an SD-1 and Ronni is within reach. Just have Kage teach you how to machine gun pick.

An earlier Marshall doesn't really do Le Tekro, Zakk, Akira and other 80's stuff as well, but it does George and Warren type 80's and can do a really good EVH too. Set differently it has a killer Hendrixy clean.

Sorry man. You need both. You could get both for probably the same price as that new fridge your wife got. I mean, your beers stayed just as cold in that old fridge didn't they? That fridge is hers because the old one didn't look as nice. It still Worked! These amps are yours. Tit for tat, baby. Try that argument on your wife for me and let me know how it works out ok? If it's good, I might use it.

I've tried similar arguements about gear...

Luckily, I was arguing about our new couches, so at least I had somewhere comfortable to sleep (although the old one was a damn fine couch)!

The fridge was already there, now I can use the Bosch in-wall oven, Kitchenaid washer, and new cooktop as leverage

I know your right about both but I have made up my mind and I am getting an earlier Super Lead, I want that open roar as well as the killer Marshall EL34 cleans worst than machine gun Ronnie right now. Ant's clip he just posted is making me feel all funny in places right now :scared:

BTW the Charvel freaking rules for what I payed, alreadt wore paint off the floyd and funked the board it has gotten so much play time  Changing the TZ though to a Custom.

A good, clear sounding 2204/2203 can do the hendrixy clean/breakup marshall tones almost as well as a 1987/1959, its all in how you turn the knobs.

I have to wait though as I am in Nick hell with a sick kid

I have one of these:

While not as cork sniffing cool as a metalface it is still a bad ass sounding head. Very well respected in the Marshall community as well. Killer cleans on it as you have stated you want. Biggest thing I have found is that it is very clear (and super loud), all my pedals sound best through this head. I have an Uber and a Cameron Marshall - but I use this head with my band. I run it fairly clean with both vols at 3 and run a pedal board into the front. Very versatile that way, sounds huge and I'm never worried about not being heard. They are not too much ca$hola either. YMMV.

Yeah not interested in an 800 right now, I have one pretty local to me for a good price but I am going to just sit and wait for the right early 70s JMP.

6550's are where its at Scott. That modded plexi is basically my take on the 2203 circuit with tweaks and 6550's. It was my main amp forever. El34's take too much away from the bigness of it. Out of all the ones I've owned, its the best one. The Super Trem will be cool when I get a chance to make it better...too many irons in the fire at the moment.

Thanks Darren. 6550's are killer in these old amps when they are set up for them.

What year is that plexi ? Can that be done on a re-issue ? Is it a major mod or just a few values change ?
