I think you are mistaken. I follow the Soldano gear carefully and for years.
About 3 years ago I looked for about 18 months before I found an SM100r. Since the economy has tanked they are now showing up every 6 months or so. They were not selling for more than $3200 during GOOD TIMES if I recall correctly.

Surf Box has dropped from ~$4000 to ~ $2500. Used SLOs can now be had for $2400 or even less if you are patient.

On the other hand I'm pretty sure I saw brad offering one here for $3200 or so a few months ago, and it was a euro version, and I think it sold. Assuming the buyer paid Soldano to replace the transformers, that means someone was willing to pay $3600 or so to get a SM100R.

Like many things that are rarely for sale, market price is a loose concept.

I am in no hurry to sell it. I don't need the money so I can hold on to it. It is a nice amp.

You asked and I'm relaying my perception. This is not fact. Just my .02 on a disc-uss-ion board.

I paid $2800 for mine about 3 years ago and had it shipped from France to Soldano for $250 and new DeYoung US spec transformer installed $500.

If you are in no rush to sell it then perhaps sooner or more likely later someone might pay $3000 for it. List it for $4,000 if you want and see what happens.

Just waiting for the announcement that David has secured his 112th Soldano.....

Question for the SLO lovers popping in this thread ..

not to hijack a thread but .. I just pickd up an 04 SLO near mint condition, going to send it to mike for a once over and while it was there was going to have 3 things done ..

1)remove the loop
2)depth mod (on/off)
3) half power switch

thoughts .. worth jumping into the above... ?

I'll see what replies I get from my other inquiries. But that was a good idea, put it up on eBay with a high start bid and if it sells, fine. If not it's also cool and I'll hang on to it, it's already well packed.

is the sm 100 just the power section of the slo ? and if so, wouldnt it be a wiser choice to simply find a slo instead as they are always around? Whats the differance?

I don't know. I am not really familiar with all the subtleties of Soldano amps. I just know that the SM-100R I have is a power amp, no pre-amp.

It is the power amp section of the SLO, but they are very rare and hard to find, hence the price they sell for.

I've PM'd you twice with no reply.

If you are meaning me, I do not have, nor ever received any PM messages on this board.

Ha. You were negotiating the white Soldano rack ? I was in touch with the guy too but the price is totally crazy IMHO. He was asking almost twice what I paid for my SLO100R for his SM100R+SP77+white case. That is unreasonable. FYI, 3 years ago, a friend on HRI proposed me 2 SM100R+8U rack for $2000. Too bad I hadn't the dough at the time and the guy wouldn't sell just one. I really do want a SM100R badly but not THAT badly LOL. ;)
The last one I remember went away for .... 2000 Bucks (€uro)

And Jack Luminous had this one on his harddrive

One went for €1500 (¥200,000) 2 months ago in Japan and I really feel it was overpriced. It's only a mono 100W power amp after all.
Only crazy japanese collectors would pay such a price.

Can't help ya on the SM-100R, but I have seen two SLO 100s sell in the last month for under $2k...

Deals for buyer and seller are out there if you are sharp enough to catch them.

The SLO has the EQ and a cathode follower smoothing stage (that produces distortion) post-loop return. The X88R/SM100R setup moves both to the preamp, so the resulting poweramp is somewhat more transparent in my experience. Lots of people run into the loops of SLOs though.

Take my advice with a grain of salt, but it seems like you'd be spending money on mods that aren't really necessary.

1. The SLO loop is designed so that it doesn't affect tone much when not being used. Also, you might want to use the loop in the future.
2. The Depth mod on zero is supposed to sound the same as stock.
3. Pull two power tubes. Although, when I've done this with other amps it didn't make that much difference in tone. I could see doing it with a medium gain amp like a Plexi to maybe make it break up faster, but not with a modern amp that produces most of it's gain in the preamp.

Good luck.
