Speaker & Cab Recommendations

Thanks for the information... I'm anxious to route the 11R through the 2:90 and into some cabs - something I haven't done yet. I've played the one I have in my recording desk through powered monitors and the one in my rack rig through headphones, but I haven't had the opportunity to crank and tweak :D I also haven't had the opportunity to route the V-Twin through the 2:90 and out to some cabs. I'm looking forward to getting some decent speakers and lighting things up

I wish that everything was built in the U.S., but the reality is that it's not. That won't stop me from buying the Avatar cabs, though (assuming that's what I decide on). A lot of companies outsource manufacturing :aww:

How about two used Bogner OS 2x12?? typically around 500.00ea., has to be one of the best sounding 2x12 cabs I have played thru!! Not sure what you are looking for in speakers, they come with V30s, which I typically like for Mesa stuff, if you want a more classic rock sound(like I did) take them out sell them and buy WGS!! Awesome speakers!! I used the Vet30/ET65 combo in mine and it sounds perfect! Inexpensive, shipped fast, no wait!!

By outsourced, I just mean Avatar doesn't build the cabs...they cover them, add the grill cloth and install and wire the speakers. The cabs are still made in the USA, just by a different manufacturer. At least that's how I understood it.

I saw that pair of Bogner's for sale and was interested, but didn't know for certain if I wanted to spend the extra money over what a pair of Avatar's would cost. I haven't decided on the Avatar cabs yet, but they are kind of my benchmark in terms of a decent cabinet at a decent price. Having said that, I would certainly favor the Bogner's over the Avatar's...

If you can swing the Bogner 212 cabs I would go that way. There was an old thread showing the gut shots of the Bogner oversized 212 compared to the Avatar. The Bogner was more impressing looking on the side, better bracing as I remember.

I'm not even sure if they are still for sale - I did a quick search and didn't see them, but it could be user error ;)

On a related topic, do you know if they sell live-in flight cases that would fit the over-sized Bogner cabs? My intention is to get live-in cases for whatever cabinet I choose...

Thanks

Not idea about the live in flight cases for the bogner cabs, but I would bet someone makes some that would work.

Not really a fan of those big road cases, for me I don't play out enough to make heavy road cases worthwhile.

I haven't gigged in a long time, but there might be an opportunity to get into something soon. My live rig is in a 14U rack and I have a flight case "box" that holds my speaker stands and peripheral stuff, so I figured cases for the speaker cabs would be a good idea. It will add a little weight, but it should prevent excessive damage.

If you already have a big 14U rack and carry your stuff in a trailer to gigs, than the road cases for the cabs are a great idea.

I was just sharing my experience. I bought into the that I needed a road case in the past. For example with my keyboard, I bought a very nice $400 road case, it is about 80lbs, couple that with a 60lb keyboard and that is just too much for me to get out of the basement or move by myself. With a soft SKB case, I can move my keyboard by myself and it protects it well enough.

i LOVE my fryette fatbottom, you might want to check out the deliverance 2x12.

Thanks  I'll do a little on-line research.

I was at Guitar Center yesterday and looked at a Mesa 2x12 with V30's. I didn't play through it, though. It was close to $650 - are they really worth that kind of coin?

hi!!

first off!! have to agree with rock god about the Eminence
speakers.

I've tried some Bogner cabs and they sound good

I've tried Mesa cabs and they sound good

I've tried Marshall cabs and they sound good

I've tried fender cabs and they sound good

Krank,,,peavey,,,Traynor,,etc etc,,get the picture??

for the last ten years or so I've been using a couple of Avatar upright slant top 2x12's that sound just as good(better I think) and cost me a couple hundred less each than most of those others. the Bogners may have more bracing than the Avatars but that(IMO) has little or no effect on the sound,,just makes them heavier. :-) I've been bashing the Avatars around for years now and they're built like tanks.
and once I put the EV's in them they sound better than anything else I've heard.

my advice is don't waste your money on a name,,buy a well built cabinet for a great price,,load it with great speakers that deliver what you want(they're all different) and be happy. :D

P.S. the guys at Avatar will put whatever combination of speakers you ask for in the cabinets,,I suggest the G12H30's(they don't have EV's)

good luck!!

Thanks...
That was more or less my thought process. There is a lot of love for the "high end" cabinets (Bogner, Mesa, Mills, Port City, etc.) on the forum and I wanted to get input from the people that use them. I'm sure that some cabinets sound better than others, but like I said, I don't know if there is enough difference - at least to my ears - to justify the investment. I also doubt that the poor souls sitting in a bar listening to me play would notice a difference between an Avatar cab and one from Port City (except, of course, that guitar player dude at the front table that knows more about your equipment than you do   )

I'm leaning towards Avatar right now and will read back through the thread and ponder the speaker recommendations.

Thanks to everyone
