how much more is the polytune giving you? strum all the notes and tune is great but what about for dropped tuning or tuned half a step down? I hear it will not display flat notes and just display everything as the note below but sharp? That doesn't seem like much but would be annoying.

I use the Poly in strobe mode. I don't use the strum all setting.

Great topic, was thinking of this recently as well. I see TU-2's go for 50$ used most days of the week, how much more is the polytune giving you? strum all the notes and tune is great but what about for dropped tuning or tuned half a step down? I hear it will not display flat notes and just display everything as the note below but sharp? That doesn't seem like much but would be annoying. Does the TU-2 do this as well??

Not all boss buffers are the same, but I found the TU-2 buffer to be pretty sucky. It altered the tone (dulled) in a way I didn't like. I also found the accuracy not the greatest.

I personally would go with a Sonic Research turbo tuner. Before those were out I bought Peterson strobo stomp2. Its a nice tuner, but has had to be fixed once by me (Peterson was helpful). I also modded it for true bypass. Peterson claims its true bypass, but it actually has a 1meg anti pop resistor from positive to ground. I noticed this in a long pedal chain, even with a buffer here or there.

I guess another thing to consider is how well the display can be seen in all light. Most of us will play at night or in darker settings but there have been complaints that the BOSS and a lot of other tuners, cannot be seen in the daylight when it is bright out. I think for my needs, I'll probably go with the polytune.

I've been using TU-2 forever.

I remember seeing a tuner shootout vid with the Sonic Research and would like to try that someday.

I also use the Peterson Strobostomp. They same one that steve-k is using just in grey.
Unfortunately they produce it anymore.Well this version.
It drives me nuts because the strobes never and i mean NEVER stand still.
It has great features. You can also store different tunings on it.
Never tried the Turbo Tuner though but only heard and read good things from it.

I use the peterson strobo stomp. Many people have difficulty using a stobe at first. But I used a real peterson for many years, so it becomes second nature. Hey and just for the quick tune at home, the peterson strobo software for IPOD/Phone is awesome for 10 bucks.

Got a Sonic Research ST-200 in a trade and never really cared for it, considered it some type of gadget (the other pedal in the trade, a Zoom Tri Metal, didn't help the perception)
Then I decided I needed a pedal tuner, considered a Polytune, looked online and saw everybody is raving about the ST-200... guess I'll just keep it

I have a Peterson Strob-o-Stomp, and consider it the best $200 that I have spent on guitar related purchases.

I love the poly mini for live. Make sure you try it in different positions in chain. I can be noisy if towards end of chain with high gain. I put it 2nd and now its quiet. Peterson great for intonation but too sensitive for live. Pitchblack not too durable.

I just bought one of the new Peterson strobe stomp tuners. It's big and easy to see. Has all sorts of features.

This. Had my eye on the new Peterson stomp, looks great.
Can't complain about my TC Polytune & Polytune Mini Noir
If accuracy is your thing the Peterson is the best (strobo) whereas the new TC Polutune 2 seems to look pretty neat too.

Korg Pitchblack. Big display. Accurate, easy to see in the dark.
how does the korg handle low tuning? My cousin actually has one for sale. I may just that because convienence.

Ok so I am leaning toward the poly mini but as stated in my post above I can get a pitchblack from my Cuz.

Another one for the Turbo Tuner. It's extremely fast and accurate.

The topic of intonation has me curious, are the strobe tuners a better "all around tuner"? I'm about to try my hand at intonation and while I've been happy with my Poly, doesn't sound like it's gonna cut it here.

+ 1 on the PolyTune. Works great and it has LED's so you can see it clearly in broad daylight. And it's true bypass, not that big of a deal to me, but for the purists, it makes the diff.

well I ended up with a mint Pitch Black for $25.

Best way to go. Convenient and its a great tuner. Thats what I used until I got a headstock tuner. Now I dont have an extra thing to carry around.
