Get a guitar you dig that works for you, IMO. Doesn't matter what anyone else uses, how they use it or why.
For example, I dig Rics...but a Ric into my Engl rig sounds nothing like a Ric. While I wouldn't use a Ric to play metal, it's not because of the sounds or the looks (I dig both)..., they're not fast necks IME.
