I will be the odd ball and say Vigier due to the fact the Shane Lane flat board would be cool to mess around with.

Real pretty $$$$$ guitar Steve :D

id love a suhr with HSH natural guthrie with a vigier lane fretboard feel.
that lane neck was something to behold for speed.
The Guthrie has a 16 inch radius, it is nearly as flat as the 17 inch radius vigier lane...

Steve

The Lane Vigier has an "infinite" radius, i.e. totally flat. A guy I know has a Hufschmid (sp?) 7 string that has a totally flat board, and probably the lowest action I've ever seen. It was literally laying right on the frets and was overall quite weird to play. For shredding, I can somewhat see the point but for chords it just felt grim.

FWIW, I pick Suhr because my two Suhrs have been outrageously good guitars. My S4 is just the shit. Can't say anything bad about Vigier though - my friend has a very nice Excalibur Ultra Blues - they're fantastic but I just prefer Suhr.

I love both for their own reasons... There's something more raw about the Vigier style, but the Suhr sure have style.

Peace,
V.

I'd probably go with a custom Suhr Standard. My old Vigier was amazing though.

EDIT: Holy shit. The vote is 27-3 in favor of Suhr? That's crazy. Seems Vigier's don't get much respect. The build quality and tone are every bit as nice as Suhr. Neither one is better than the other, but I didn't expect Suhr to get so many more votes.

i kinda felt the vigier body was too thin or non resonant for some reason. surhs don't have that problem. but the lane neck and action and string tension was just so comfortable to me. i grew up on a nylon string and i love flat wide fingerboards.

It probably has to do more so with the massive Ugly factor that Vigiers have.
They have hideous headstocks(or maybe the logo) and mis cut bodies.
The ones I have played just didn't resonate either.
Yours is one of the nicer ones I've seen, but for me

I think the headstocks look perfectly fine. I do agree that the odd shape of the bodies is kind of unattractive. I liked it at first, but it did bother me after a while.

If I could ever afford a new Suhr, I would custom order this exact guitar. Perfection IMO.

Where do you get that The SL has 17 inch radius? I had a 16 inch radius Suhr and it feels quite different than the flat SL. Heck the 20 inch radius on the Carvin Holdsworth is in-between them

As for the original question, both of them have worse resale value than say a Tyler. But I'd pick the Vigier any day... After having had 5 each. Side note you can get Vigiers with SS frets.

I can see that. One thing I don't like actually is the lack of any kind of forearm contour.

I've never played either, but I'm guessing I'd like Suhr better. However I've liked the look of Vigier since I first saw ads for them in the late 80s!?!?

But aren't Suhrs made here in the US? And aren't Vigiers made in the home of my ancestors...in the land of snails & heavy cream sauce?

...hmmmm...heavy cream sauce grrrrrhhhhh...

Old thread of course, but I'm trying to decide whether to swap my Suhr Modern out for a Vigier SL Sig & could do with some advice before I make a heinous error.

Parting with my Suhr Custom is a pretty tough decision. It's really warm & resonant & pretty, but the cutaway increasingly gets on my nerves. I'll also suffer a financial loss in the process.
If the Suhr Modern wasn't an available product, I'd be looking at a different 24 fret guitar. Either a JP, Vigier Excalibur or a Custom 24.

I'll need to play the SL Sig properly to see whether I'd dig the flat fretboard but i'm also a classical guitar player where that isn't entirely alien to me.

In terms of the EBMM & Vigier, i'd be sacrificing looks & tone for playability. Custom 24's can compete in terms of tone, but I prefer unfinished necks.

The Vigier seems to offer all the functionality of a modern superstrat, but I'm worried it'll sound sterile in comparison to the Suhr i've been playing the last few years & regret the decision.
The Suhr Modern delivers in virtually every facet of its design for me...except the cutaway. All the other 24 fret guitars on the market seem to have been consciously designed for optimum fret access.

I owned a Vigier Shawn Lane and the flat radius did not but me at all. You can play chords and do bends with no problems at all. I think the pickups are the weak point of the Vigier SL, but that is easily remedied. I just loved played the guitar. It was so effortless to play. I have not played a Suhr Modern lately so I cannot make a comparison between the two.

if you want to try something different get an Anderson Angel. I love the suhr neck profile!

Thanks for the reply! I've had my eye on them for a while. I've only really got an opportunity to trade so struggling to justify the decision. What made you switch it out?

Mniel8195, I've always considered the Andersons to be of a similar family to Suhr. I didn't know they did a 24 fret guitar actually. By all accounts if they have the mojo and ease of playability, that model seems like a winner though not easily obtained.

I sold the guitar to raise money to buy a house. Otherwise I would have kept it.
