I didn't find out who they were till 5 or 6 years ago ..... unfortunately after the mid 90's .... I stopped looking for new music .... once in a while though some new music would find me .... these guys were one of those bands ...

i was all into the first couple albums, Blood Mountain i remember not being into much, and then Crack the Skye i fucking HATED as people were comparing it to zeppelin 4 and shit, i just kind of stopped listening after that. probably time to go back and see what i missed

I still say Zakk Wylde should replace Brent Hinds in Mastodon. Not only can he play the parts, but he kinda sounds like Brent when he sings. Plus Zakk has already made a career out of replacing dead musicians in their bands. This is the next logical step.

I think it would be a downgrade in terms of payday from Pantera, though it could be cool.

Not really. Yeah, Pantera get more per show as a legacy band, but he won't get a cut of merch or album sales (well, streams these days), and they won't play as many shows.
Mastodon is still writing, touring, and growing. With all the turmoil and news surrounding the band, they're going to get bigger than they already are. They will win the Grammy next year for the song about Brent. They will be headlining tours and festivals more frequently. They're going to pass Pantera in market share soon.
So yeah, short term yes. Long term, who knows?

I said this when Brent first left, not just his voice but I don’t know any other guys that likely share a good amount of similar influences where country/chicken pickin was just as important as Sabbath riffs.
It’d be interesting to see, while Zakk’s obviously held the place of some of the greats, some of that Mastodon shit is straight up prog and not the usual 4/4, 3.5 minute songs.

That doc was pretty heavy and was spot on to how I assumed things went down at the end. Brent made it clear he was unhappy for a long time but he also could have left at any point if he were that unhappy. Unfortunately, all the unhappiness was likely a result of the substance abuse and just not realizing what he built with those guys, outside of brief moments of clarity that likely kept him in the band.
I appreciate how the guys stated their side of things without getting into detail about how bad Brent would get as that would become the cannon fodder of it all, just focusing on his drunk antics instead of everything he brought to the band and what he meant to those guys. I’ve heard some non-public stories and it’s amazing they made it that long without him getting locked up. He’s fortunate to have had a lot of people around him that loved and believed in him for so long, which is probably more telling of his sober side.
I’ll always support these guys, but Brent passing ended a period of life where that band got me through the hardest things I’ve ever experienced. I was actually dreading this next album until Brent died because my life has been on a steady incline ever since Hushed And Grimm and their records have coincided with crazy life shit for me. Once Brent passed I knew that chapter was closed, I’m not dreading the album now, I’m just hopeful it kicks my ass and Nick doesn’t strip all the Gilmour goodness out of those solos.
