Thoughts on the EVM12L?

Looking for something to pair my Mesa V30 in an Emperor OS 212.

Also who in the world needs the 300w version of this? Not even Zakk's rig needs it.

Pairs okay with a V30 but EVM12L + Redback is heaven.

300 watters are kinda scooped & weird sounding compared to the 200 watters which have the awesome mids. The 200 watt versions are where it’s at. I have 8 of them, 2 are the modern reproduction, 2 from the 80’s, 4 from the 90’s. They all sound good but I prefer the 80’s & especially 90’s. Seems like the 80’s are the most sought after.

12Ls are awesome. Heavy though. I only use them in 1x12s. The Zakk version is darker. It's not for extra power handling. It just gets that for "free" from using pro line components.

For hard rock and metal it's a hard combo to beat. If I was just playing metal I would just go with two EVM12L personally, but I am not the biggest V30 fan. Every one I've ever had I've ended up selling because I like other speakers better for those sounds.

I have some paired with V30's in a Mesa Traditional Straight 4x12 cab, and they sound great paired this way.

The V30's and the EVM12L's are the older ones, and I believe they each sound a little different from the newer ones.

I had the Zack EVM's in a Mills Acoustic 4x12 and they were overwhelming in that cab (replaced them with some K100's and the cab sounded a lot better).

The Redback has my curiosity.

I had a 4x12 loaded with EVM12L's and was never able to drive them at a volume where I thought they sounded and felt better than my 12H-30's, and I play loud.

I absolutely love redbacks. I haven't found a speaker that does it for me like them. I came from the 12h30s. At first, they have almost too much presence, but after you break them in, they sound amazing.

I play really loud also, and it shortened the break in time

To pair with V30s, I'd say either a T75 or a Greenback. I'm not the biggest fan of V30s, either, though, and generally prefer them by themselves.

For an EVM12L pair, I'd second the K100 and add the Classic Lead 80 or an EVM12S. Any of those might pair well with a V30.

For the most part, I've gotten away from mixing speakers in the same cab, though. Too much time and effort for very little result. Mixing cabs with different speakers in each is another story and a lot less work but takes more money and space.

I was going to buy an EVM 12L but they don't sell them in 16 ohms (maybe you can special order them, I don't know), and 16 is what I wanted. So I opted for a WGS 12L, which is a knockoff. I paired it with a Celestion G12H-30 Anniversary in an ENGL closed back 2x12. If you like tight bass and lots of it, this thing will shake the house. I have it under a homemade open back 2x12 with two Jensen Blackbird 100's. I'm happy forever now. This is better than my Marshall 4x12 from 1986. Even my JMP 2204 and JCM 2203 run through the two 2x12's. The ENGL came with two V30's. Now it's so much better. It's a little ridiculous, but the total power rating for those two cabs is 430 watts. I also have a WGS 12L in a closed back oversized 1x12 from Port City. I don't have a decibel meter, but I swear the single is louder than the other two combined.

So my rig is actually set up where my two 212s are both wired in stereo behind a a KHE ACS 4, so I can technically mix & match any 2 speakers across my 212s.
Two ENGL's with the above speakers in each was my original intention, spread out and vertical. I'm still looking for another used ENGL 2x12. They go for around a thousand bucks but I lucked out and found one in great condition for $450. I wanted to get a Magnatone stereo amp for that setup, with the pitch shifting vibrato. That was going to be my clean setup. For dirt I tend to use Bedrock or Marshall.

That's a bummer as all of my speakers are 16 ohms right now. Have you compared an original to the WGS?

I'm not inherently opposed to a knock off if it's good, but also I probably could just get away with an 8 ohm without issue.

Not a good idea. 8 ohm Mesa V30's are pretty easy to come by. I had two of those with two EVM12L in a 4x12. Brutal sounding, and loud as hell. Though still not as loud as my alnico EV SRO12 and Fane Medusa 30 loaded 4x12.

I use a Boss Waza TAE, which is an attenuator with a solidstate power section, so it can handle any ohm speaker thrown at it.

Technically my speaker ohms don't really matter (provided they're between 4 & 16), but I try to keep everything at 16 ohms for simplicity.
