Thoughts on the EVM12L?

hit or miss. you gotta try em with your shit.

i used to use ev's and say to myself "ah, so clear, full, and uncolored" then go back to celestion and go "oh theres that celestion color that i missed", then i'd play ev's again some years later and go all in, then a few years later flip em and get celestions. it all about your ears, your mood, if there are dollar signs in your eyes (eh man you get 2 celestions for every 1 ev, money wise), etc. RN i'm in my celestion "i want the color" phase. who knows what tomorrow may bring. i don't care to mix either. i can't really give you a reason why excepet that i was "all or nothing" i guess. everytime i x patterned ANYTHING, i always felt underwhelmed. eventually, i decided mixing speakers in a cab is only good if you mic and record regularly, and have DOG EARS.

I have been thinking about putting an old EV + Celestion cab together for some time, but always pushed that out; I think it's the weight that scares me :D
It's about time though.
I'm considering doing two 2x12, just to manage the weight; what do you think?
Is the half closed/open back config key to "that" sound?
If going 4x12, i'm tempted to load an old Marshall or Hiwatt / Sound City cab with that config.

I've got 2 old metal-grill Mesa split-back 4x12s with EV/C90 as well as Marshall 4x12s with all EV and all Celestions. The Marshall EV cab weighs a ton, but I don't take it anywhere. The Mesa cabs also weigh a ton, but I think the cabs themselves weigh more than Marshall cabs. I've never weighed either when I had them unloaded, so I don't really know. The Mesa cabs are built like lead tanks.

Having said that, the Mesa 2x12s are still pretty heavy and bigger than most vertical 2x12s. The 2 additional speakers would account for about 30 lbs more.

As for "that" sound, if that's what I want, nothing beats the Mesa cabs. If I'm just wanting to get in the ballpark, the Marshalls are close enough that I doubt most could tell, probably 90% there. Sometimes, the last 10% is worth it, sometimes it isn't.

Thanks for all the inputs.
Are all those Mesa cabs of the closed back (bottom) / open back (top) config, including the 2x12s?
