Tone is not in the fingers. Good playing is in the fingers attatched to the brain. Tone is made up of many factors The amp, tubes ,cables, power source, picks, pickups, guitars, cabs, speakers. Whoever says it is in the fingers go ask EVH why he spent so much time on his listed above gear.

Then why did Ted Nugent say when he played through Eddies gear he sounded nothing like Eddie and that magical tone was not there, then Eddie picked it up and bingo!!!! Why does Rockstah produce amazing VH tone in his clips with his mod amps, and others that play VH stuff on it sounds nothing like the Van Halen tone? Same amp and same gear, different hands. I really wonder!!!!!

Sounding like Eddie, is just that, sounding like Eddie. Eddie has his own signature vibrato, bends, whammy tricks, etc.. This has nothing to do with great Tone. With a clean Fender amp and no drive pedals how will Eddie produce his signature brown sound. He won't.

That is not what I said, he said the magical tone the brown sound was not there, this was from Ted Nugent. And In Rockstahs mod clips the tone not technique he gets does not sound the same as his clips with others playing the amp. I have had an amp in a room dialed exactly the same and two players playing through it actually tonally sounded different.

I am not arguing base tone does not come from an amp. But you take a dozen players and have them play the same lick, and their technique will have a factor on shaping the tone all the while playing through the same amp. That is not saying you take a Fender and put it up against a Diezel the tone is not going to be different. But you take a mid gain designed amp against a mid gain designed amp or a high gain to high gain and I bet you would see these results more often than one would want to admit. Look at the the one Axe FX video where the guy said he was using Mark Days patches he did not have time to setup his own. Same amp or sim in this case, however the tone that came out was totally different because of technique. Just my opinion but I say 60/40 or 70/30 that tone is in the hands.

Well written sir. Letting each note breathe and really focusing on your vibrato and being aware of how each note or chord really sounds is what separates an amatuer from a good musician.
I've heard many men with awful vibrato and no musical awareness or feel wank it up on super expensive gear, and likewise many great players show amazing skill and even good tone with average "low end" gear.

We're all amp junkies here and I do believe that equipment/gear plays a large role in tone. I also think some people get too caught up in buying gear and don't practice enough.
Then again, some men may enjoy the gear more than the actual guitar playing, and that's just fine. To each their own.
Good gear will change your tone, but it will not replace good technique.

True, it is way more fingers then anything else having said that the fetish of good sounding instruments and circuits is grand___ I am looking forward to hearing the Cameron in person ___ But YEAH It is shocking how fingers/ears is overlooked again and again and again

I purposely overlooked in search for the amp to make me sound like what I wanted to hear. I finally figured out my focus on technique of vibrato, letting notes breath, chordal shifts and resolving to not resolve and meaning to really changes the overall tone of any player. Vibrato alone on a bend can sound great for a guy on a pignose and another guy on a $5000 amp sounds like shit. But what is really funny is the guy with great vibrato on the expensive amp still stays about the same, sure some subtle differences, but not $5000 worth.

I like to buy gear and have been through my share over the last 3 years now. I still gas for a few things. But I find myself not letting that take away from what my fingers can learn to do and get better at. Legato for me was a weak spot, alternate picking I am very good at. After a year of practicing legato and somewhat being better on the same amp it sounds better and different. So the fingers and technique improvement was there, the afterfact was tone.

I love gear, the manuals, the switches, the tubes and lights, etc, etc, .... But even more so I love to listen to a guy like Pete Thorn who has the tone/technique in his hands and can take anything and make it into a gem. Make it into listenable music that moves people in different ways. Chubtones CD has done that for me, Justin Derrico's CD has done that for m and Mentoneman has put out some stuff I am and will always be in awe of. There are others as well, (Mark Day) my fav, never heard every rose has its thorn with so much gain..... :D

This has been a fun thread so far, not as fun as the axe fx verses ax fx II analogy with cool dolls, but eh, still fun!!!

Peace and Love.....

Tim

bumping an old thread for the laughs, i remembered this one out of left field, warning - may contain barzini content

It is my personal belief that ALL gear in their various types, and various forms, are tools to accomplish a goal. I also believe that GREAT gear doesn’t guarantee GREAT results. It merely provides the potential for a variety of specific results.

Bottom line-- gear is no substitute for: playing proficiency, raw talent, the ability to write and/or perform good piece of music or a song (Songs have lyrics), or the ability to entertain an audience. Approached wisely—it (gear) can be a source of inspiration, expressiveness, control and a means to an end or beginning, ultimately used to its highest potential when used to make music. Approached by the unprepared, the gear quest can be frustrating, distracting, and unnecessarily costly.

The distinctions between Style, Technique, Sound and Tone are worth making, and appear to be the source of heated debate among players. The observation that when multiple players play on the same rig-- the tones heard from the rig, often changes, supports the fact that tone is influenced by the player, as well as influences the player. There are those who observe that when they play on a different selection of gear than what they’re accustomed to, that they “Sound” the Same/Similar, no matter the gear. There are also those who contend that they notice the sound differences, when they play through various equipment—and acknowledge that certain equipment inspires, more than others, Which is why Yo Yo Ma uses a $2M Stradivarius Cello-- because of how it sounds and plays. The "$2M Stradivarius Cello" allows him to coax tones out of it, which other Cellos simply don’t have in them to coax out. Obviously the cello unattended produces nothing, as well -- the hands without the instrument, produce nothing—but for clapping, snapping your fingers, whistling, or making hand farts. The same hands on an inferior cello/classical guitar etc... End up having different tone results with differing instruments, because the tone isn't in the hands. It's a result of hands playing an instrument, being perceived by the listener. It's up to the player to begin the process of "generating the tone", which is a two part symbiotic process of player and instrument- as each requires one another, for the tone to be manifested.

All I can say is when I hear what I feel to be good tone, it inspires me to play better and be more creative. Whether or not that is really happening is for others to decide.
