Tried all the Overdrive pedals as boosts - back to the old Boss SD-1 - Video

I currently have 3 amps that I run with a Boost...

Soldano SLO-30
Soldano Astro 20
Bogner 3534 (also has its own built in boost)

In the past with other amps I have always bounced between the Boss SD-1 and Ibanez TS808.

I found I preferred the SD-1, but then everyone told me to try a Klon, so I bought a Way Huge Conspiracy Theory (Klon circuit).

I just find I prefer the SD-1 and that is what I am going to use.

I keep the level at 3 o'clock and the gain at 9 o'clock.
It works best with my Soldanos that way, but my Bogner is a bit more finicky with any boost.
It sounds great with its built in boost, but that is not as aggressive.

I just may need to lower the gain on the SD-1 down near minimum and see how that works.

I do have a bunch of YouTube videos with the SD-1 boosting Friedmans, Victorys, and the Soldanos, I may need to do more with these specific settings.

Here is a video of the SD-1 boosting a Friedman Little Sister, I miss that amp, but I have moved on to multi channel amps, but the Little Sister had amazing tone.

I've got a ton of boosts/overdrives around and enjoy all of them to some extent, but in the end the SD-1 is usually the one I go back to the most readily. I don't know how much of that is familiarity and how much is just the sound itself. That's especially true for anything remotely Marshall-like as an amp.

I think the SD-9 and variants is just as good but a bit more rock and a bit less metal, so something like that. The both work equally well. I just prefer the SD-1.

My boosts are amp dependent. 1980 JMP 2203 prefers the SD1. And, not my 1986 SD1; my newer made version that was 40$ a couple years ago on Amazon. The 86 has more '3D' quality to it, while the newer one sounds good but when I can crank the amp it takes the tone to another level. Strange but true. The 1986 SD1 doesn't have that same effect when the Marshall is turned up...still great but not as great as the newer version SD1.
My Orange OR60 and Mesa Triple Rec prefer the OD1X. Those 2 boost pedals are all I need.

I hate the sd1 😂

Honestly just everything it can do, there's some version of a tube screamer that can do it better imo

I'm glad you like it though op, it's very popular and comfy and easy to dial in

SD1/KOT/TS/Klones all do a great job—I swap all the time but currently running just an EQ pedal

Tim/Timmy is cool too but damn apparently I need to sent it to @griff10672 every couple years for maintenance. Thing gets noisy and finicky
