I think its great,it really grew on me. And i believe it was a record company move to release that song first, to try to capture some new fans for VH, thats why its not a total shred fest. Just wait til the cd drops, i bet it will have some good old VH all over it.

If that abortion of a song captures new fans then they have accomplished nothing short of a miracle.

That song is horrible, the tone is blah, lyrics and vocals shoddy and dated, the solo is forgettable (wait was there as solo?), and it just feels like a neutered VH.

Honestly if it wasn't VH I think the majority of you would hate it as well, "Undertow" from Mr. Big is the last great single that i've heard from an aging rock band with a mostly original lineup.

I like their last song better, hmmmm hang on........ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXafvx8Tn1g&feature=fvst
Man, if the new VH song was this good, people would send the new record multiplatinum.

Sammy and Michael are definitely having the last laugh. And I say that as a huge VH fan, hoping beyond hope that they could put out some good new music. But props to Chickenfoot...

"Big Foot" is one of my favorite recent tracks by anyone. I have to agree with you completely. This was the kind of track I was expecting from VH, some powerhouse groove, but with DLR driving it. That alone would have sold the album. Tatoo just doesn't compare to this. I had to hear Big Foot for three seconds to know it rocked. How many times in this thread have people had to listen to Tatoo multiple times for it to "grow on them" just to get to the level of "not so bad."

I thought "Bigfoot" was cliche as anything Sammy's ever written as a solo artist. I'm not saying "Tattoo" is the miracle we all hoped for, but to put "Bigfoot" on some sort of groove-rock pedestal is morbidly absurd. I mean, the video features a chicken...the band's name is Chickenfoot. And let us recall the lyric, "Only time will tell if we stand the test of time." No fucking shit, Sammy! Seriously?

I don't see anyone putting Big Foot on a pedestal. I said it is one of my favorite, recent, tracks by anyone. Keyword is recent. I think the main fact here is simply not that Big Foot is that great in a classic sense, but rather that Tatoo just sucks that much. Big Foot is cliche. It is cliche just as I can't drive 55 is cliche. But they are both great songs. DLR has many great songs, most of which are cliche. In fact, there are too many to list. Even if Big Foot were a 5 on a 10 scale, Tatoo isn't registering for me. It is a snoozefest for me, and I really wish it weren't. I will be completely honest with you. I have both Chickenfoot albums. I paid for them, I didn't download them for free. I don't find myself listening to the second one all the time. That said, when Big Foot comes on my player on shuffle, I get pumped and normally listen multiple times. Take that for what its worth. You don't have to like the track, but I do. Tatoo is putting me to sleep. I sure as hell hope the rest of the new VH disc is better, so that I can buy it.

I Have heard there is some Rockers on the record it's gonna be awesome

Not with that preamp fuzz bomb Ed is playing through, everyone involved should be ashamed.

Alright, not too many posts here, but I had to comment on Tattoo. First of all, l was also influenced heavily by Eddie and enjoyed both the DLR and Sammy stuff - (Balance was great!)

So, back to the comment - this song is very disappointing and the lyrics completely BLOWS! It is comical and embarrassing watching DLR dance around like Michael Jackson.
Come on VH .... I never want to hear this tune again. I hope the rest of the CD has better material.

Didn't bother watching the video posted here but I heard it for the 1st time today on the radio and I didn't think it was that bad..

Based on all the VH talk around the place, I'd say their comeback is already successfull !!

Too bad there is no band in the last 20 years or more that stirs such passion.

I finally watched the video. Sure, it's missing the magic of 1979 but I expected it to outright stink after reading the comments in this thread.

As far as the lyrics, I have no idea what a "swap meet salad" is but I certainly didn't expect anything deep and thought provoking from VH. They're a party band, so to speak.

Diamond Dave has always been a dancer.

I've watched it a few times now, and I have to admit that it sounds (and video looks) really similar in style to what they were doing right before DLR left...his voice sounds the same, the groove is similar, and most of the vids they did during that time were just of the band "performing" the song on a stage, playing to the camera. Only obvious omission is Mike's killer backing vox...I have a feeling that if those were there, it would be more like they were frozen in 1985 and just thawed out, and a lot of people might have a different opinion of the song... ;)

Now that said, I didn't necessarily like this particular sound when they were doing it back then either, when compared to their more smokin' tracks...so fingers crossed that there's some killer stuff still to come...

OK you're not a big Chickenfoot fan. I'm in a neutral corner, I like and enjoy both DLR and Sammy VH. Like a lot of people VH have been a big influence. As mentioned Sammy and Mike are having the last laugh, and I think that CF vid is musically compitent and very entertaining, which is less than I can say for VH. DLR and Sammy are on a similar level lyric wise, it's just fun time music, neither will be the next Phil Lynot.
So far I give the score of VH=0, CF=1.

Cool, good to see them at it. Though it doesn't sound like VH to me. The songwriting sounds like OG classic rock, the kind of music they destroyed when VHI hit in '78. Kinda weird.

^ This for me as well. I realize evolution and all, but I saw them on their first headlining tour in '79 , the third album, Fair Wairing and Diver Down and nothing about that reminds me of or tops or evolves even from those days.

i look at it like the "stones syndrome" at this point.

they represent an era of rock music that meant so much to so many, when they were kings, that just attempting to play their old stuff, with the DLR/EVH formula, with a semblance of sobriety and decency, will be well received.

you could argue that the stones still sound as good as they ever have, but they weren't writing, nor are they trying to reproduce, high intensity technically challenging songs like "i'm the one" or "unchained" 34 years after the fact. compare those to "brown sugar" or "start me up"......yeah..... :scared:

another thought is if VH is going to be held accountable to reproduce new material accurately, eddie is probably thinking "the heck if i'm going to play anything like ice cream man or atomic punks solos and be responsible for playing it well night after night...i'm in my 50s not 20s...and my hands and energy aren't the same"

enter the autopilot solo.

makes sense, until you see holdsworth and gambale blazing impossible lines in their 60s like it was nothing.

but they weren't partying for 40 years like van halen either.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying accept for Holdsworth Not Partying for the last 40 years. Make no mistake about it.. He was as bad if not worse then Ed when it comes to Drinking and is still currently Full Blown if you know what I mean.

i was sorta thinking about that facet of holdsy as i wrote that, as i know some stories about his penchant for imbibing as well, but bottom line is he has never been short of incredible in all the years and the 6-7 times i've seen him play live. a wizard.

eddie...saw him 3 times, 1988 monsters of rock at la colosseum, and later that year at san diego, and the first reunion roth tour at anaheim. nothing like the incredible bootlegs i have from 1976 at bogarts in san bernardino, 1977 new year's eve at pasadena civic, and 79-80 in madison, wisconsin. BLA-ZING.

My first post in this long ass thread.....

First single? Really? This is the best they can do? That sucked ass!

It's alright. Not great, not horrible. Just kinda there.

Liked Ed's solo.

I love Eddie and loved the band in the older days. My Wife and I were super excited wben we got great seats last tour. I have to say we weren't expecting them to be great as time has worn on them, but we left quite unimpressed. Really just a bland musical performance. Not mixed very well either. I hate to say it but they are washed up. I don't blame them for going at it as they are still going to sell out tours and rake in the cash. This tour will be no different imo. I wouldn't waste my money unless you want to see Ed. I saw him one last time on their last tour and I am done. Rush and even U2 destroyed Van Halen and they are just as old. We left those concerts feeling we got every penny worth and I paid 300 each ticket for U2. I'm not even a real fan. My Wife loves them but that show was great and musically Rush is an amazing group live and it was 95 and humid.

Here are some comments from a US music retailer who was invited to a playback event of the new CD. I like what he has to say. . .
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In related news, I heard from one retailer in the US that was invited to a playback of the album. He commented to me: "Overall, heavier than I expected. Highlights were China Town, Stay Frosty (think Ice Cream Man), Big River, Beats Workin' (reminds you of DOA in the verse). She's The Woman is a great track, we all thought it was a better track than the single."
Security for the presentation was super tight though - with the exec from Interscope flying in especially with a coded CD and then taking it back with him when he left. Seems the powers that be are doing everything possible to prevent a leak of the album.

PS- Dave sings "Swap meet Sally", not salad!

PPS - It's great to be able to say "Dave sings" in a post about a NEW Van Halen tune!
