Metallica was something back when they released "Ride The Lightning" and "Master Of Puppets".
After that, they started going downhill. ( After Cliff died. )

The band from the 80's is long gone. No idea who these clowns are that pretend to be Metallica today.

Yeah, your right. But when i listen back to his solos on Kill em all, god damn, that shaky vibrato fit more with the feel he had back then, man, those solos are epic to me.

Then lightning and puppets and the rest is history.

Kirk was and always will be Kirk to me, even if i dont approve of his latest solos the last couple albums. I cannot listen to them...,at all.

I'm probably commenting on a statement by a troll but this thread wouldn't exist in 2017 if it wasn't for the music they made after MOP.

Why? Because there were NO other metal bands during that era to influence up-and-coming musicians?

Was it the "LOAD" album that had not ONE SINGLE guitar solo on it anywhere?
Metallica got too rich and famous for their own good. It went to their heads.
RUSH and IRON MAIDEN were lightyears ahead of Metallica. Helloween "Keeper" era with Kiske on vocals.
King Diamond. Annihilator. Angra.
People who think Metallica was the heaviest band ever, never heard DEATH or MORBID ANGEL.

I used to be a Metallica fan back when I was in high school. Now, I am ashamed to admit it.
I won't deny the impact their first three albums made on the genre. But that doesn't erase what eventually
happened to them. I like to believe Cliff kept them focused in the right direction. When he died,

This thread wouldn't exist because they wouldn't of been asked to open a baseball game 33 years after their first album was released if it wasn't for the commercial evolution of the music after MOP. Love it or hate it, this is a fact. What is wrong with wanting to be rich and famous, especially when you can play rock music for a living? Why is wanting to sell an enormous amount of albums and fill arenas so bad? I never understood this mentality. That whole, "I'm not going to compromise my art just to make millions of dollars" is bullshit. If they continued to make albums like RTL and MOP we wouldn't be talking in 2017 about them playing the Star Spangled Banner before a professional baseball game. They would have had the same limited career as the bands Death, Angra, Morbid Angel, etc.

"Metallica got too rich and famous for their own good". Believe me, their dream from the beginning was to ultimately become rich and famous, not appease high school kids and work day jobs. Which is what would have happened if they didn't achieve commercial success.

"When he (Cliff) died, they lost it". Or did this give them the commercial green light which ultimately made them millions?

I respect all music opinions. My original statement wasn't questioning yours and had nothing to do with musical tastes.

Chuck Schuldiner was a far more interesting guitarplayer than Hetfield ever could be.
Shall we measure how great a group of musicians are, based on their commercial success?

The greatest metal band this world has ever seen is: SYMPHONY X.
And those guys are not even a tiny fraction as wealthy and successful as they deserve to be.

ANGRA is well known and respected worldwide.
Their guitarplayer is in MEGADETH now.

I don't view any of this as a "popularity contest". I judge the CONTENT only.
This is why Symphony X is #1. Michael Romeo is not only the greatest metal guitarplayer ever,
he is the greatest metal music COMPOSER ever. I listen to newer Metallica stuff and I laugh at
how boring, crappy, and simplistic it is. It is re-hashed trash. With bad production half the time.
It's a JOKE. I can see you are a fan... so I am sorry to trash your heroes.
If you get something positive out of those guys, then more power to you. I don't.

I respect Metallica greatly but I am far from being a fanboi. Hell, I didn't even see them when they opened this current tour in my hometown. I think I was the only one locally who didn't go.

Once again, it doesn't matter who you like, or who is a better musician. It's irrelevant to my initial statement that you are reading way too far into. I actually agree with many of your musical opinions and comparisons.

Well to me and many others I'd say it was Kill'em all that put them on the map... and if not that, then for sure it would Ride the Lightning... Hearing Fight Fire with Fire for the first time impacted me greatly. But I'm glad they made it and got Rich and Famous.. its sucks their music changed but so did their environment. If they shriveled up and disappeared after Cliff died that would have been sad. No comments on the Newsted era...
