We got a Kirk Hammett solo on Megadeth album

This thread inspired me to listen to the entire RTL album this morning at work. It's a classic despite it's flaws.
I remember my whole life, I always have had Master of Puppets as my number one and Kill Em' All as number two, etc. Ride the Lightning was a toss up because the Black Album is a fave too.

The past probably ten years or so, I realized that the only reason I didn't have RTL higher is because I was so used to hearing those songs on their own, in concert vids, etc. That album is a sold number 2 for me now behind MOP. The songs are insane on there.

Kinda fun I guess, although unnecessary.

Makes me sad 😞 because it reminds me, Kirk used to be a solid, interesting guitar player. Both he and Lars forgot how to play their instruments after the bloated Black album tour, the tour that stole Metallica's soul.....

But it has to be said, there is no WAY Mustaine would have come up with solos as interesting as the ones Kirk did on that album in 1984. Kirk did a great job!
I remember Kirk being the dude back then. I actually think Lars plays better now than he did during the Load and Unload years where he was an interior designer and sculptor or whatever he was doing.

Nothing beats a solid number two.

I could never get used to Mustaine's horrible vocals, and this is no different. Boring production. No life or character. Sounds good clean. I don't like this ultra clean production direction.

Nothing beats a solid number two.

And on a related note, nothing beat a good can of prunes. Said Chef Hallorann....bon appetit, fellas! You can see the quality!

But back to the discussion of crap vocals....

Dave's version is ok but it's really polished and digital sounding. It lacks the aggressiveness of the original. James' vocals give a desperation and haunting feeling to the content matter of the song. Dave's vocals=Pinching your nose and talking.

Megadeth would have been better if Dave didn't open his mouth and just stuck to playing guitar. Big Ego Dave wanted it all.

Imagine Kirk on lead vocals! He was smart and just stuck to playing.

Useless cover IMO. Just played a bit faster, and Dave voice sucks, even in studio now.
I kinda agree - I was not impressed - honestly I would've welcomed a new take on the song, like maybe slightly different rhythm, different riffs, add more of their own thing to it. Something different would have perhaps be a bit more interesting

There have been several comments about how "digital" sounding this and other album songs sound. While I do appreciate the really polished tone and the work that goes into achieving that I do miss the old days of plopping a mic in front of speakers raw recordings. I much prefer being able to connect to the angst of the playing from recordings of old over the polished, overly sterile modern recordings of today.

I heard some deep metal lore that said it RTL was mixed by an elusive figure known only as "Master of Muppets."

I guess I'll consider this cover a nice reminder that there was a time when KH didn't use wah on every solo. Still a meh KH level solo, but the lack of wah is refreshing.

And, Reb having to learn a KH solo is just funny to me. Let's get Steve Vai to lay down the rhythm tracks on a Ramones cover.

Hah, "The Phantom of the Opera".

I always wonder why Ulrich can't play double bass to this day. Live, I've heard it's a backing track. Back in the day, all those metal bands were being picketed for being the doorway to Satanism and stuff. There's at least one video of Chuck Schuldiner being spat on in concert.

No one remembers, I guess.

On the cover, I kind of feel this album is a copout/money grab. Dave sounds horrible, he needs to retire gracefully, even if "there's one killer song on the album". That's not how I want to remember Megadeth, their albums were works of art from beginning to end. Especially Rust in Peace, a seminal effort.

Big fan, I just wish all the Big 4 would retire knowing they made the world a better place with music about violence, death, questions about religion, and good friendly violent fun.

Probably all signed up to some lodge or the other by now that they owe money to.

I remember. Also miss the days of masterpiece albums start to finish. Holding out for at least one great song's a pretty low bar for sure, but what else is there at this point for this album? The mix for RTL does suck (IMO), mainly because Dave’s voice sounds like it’s in a box and not in a room with the whole band. But hey, Dave does Dave and these are the times..that’s cool, just doesn’t sound raw. I do like that he honors Kirk’s solos.

My band was recently in the studio and we talked about how those old Beatles, Zeppelin, etc recordings had a bit of noise, mistakes, etc. Those variations make a recording sound natural and what we hear daily in life.

This recording reminds me of what happens when something sounds too perfect and polished.

Justice is best . Even the cold clinical production .

I did not at all expect that sort of production. Sounds really good on a macbook speaker!

Covering your own song years later and keeping the Kirk Hammett parts...really??
At least the guy in the Megadeth version knows how to bend the notes correctly...but still.

Does this mean Dave couldn't get a real music store to carry his last album? Anyone know the % of headbangers that buy CDs from Barnes and Noble?

Target- √
Walmart-√
Barnes and Noble-√
Girl Scouts- still working out a contract but looks promising thanks to the hard work of former bassist David Ellefson

I'm calling it now......he's not going to stay "retired" for even a year. You heard it here first....😉

Yes, that means more albums and tours.
