What are you doing to release your new music?

If you have time, there’s a YouTube channel worth watching called Top Music Attorney. She has videos on every distributor going through their Terms of Service reading all that shit we never read.

This one goes through a bunch comparing the worst terms of service.

I've watched many of her videos, as well as many other folks, and that is why I am horrified at the absolute shitshow anyone releasing new music is fumbling into.

Hence my questions.

My band just finished 6 songs in the studio. Will go the usual route and keep expectations low and hope for the best.300 cds( mainly for selling at shows, along with merch), & spotify, maybe some thumb drives, some streaming, etc, etc.
Our main coin is made from the negotiated gig prices in the ryder, the rest is just extra these days.

I don't release any music because it's a crowded market and I don't see myself going on the road and starving just so I can sell t-shirts and merchandise to make ends meet. Just loads of unfinished songs like the unfinished business of ghosts.

There's just so many bands and so many records coming out every week. Seems like the more successful ones are all paying to game social media by ensuring thousands of likes and hits, which then serve to make the algorithm recommend that music to other people.

It's essentially "pay to win", like those mobile phone games where people who spend the most money on items always win in the PvP battles.

Besides that, you should realise how limited the appeal of audio is compared to videos. There's a reason why the huge bands and artists spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to make videos of literally every track that is on a release. Unless you can do the same, it's very unlikely you'll get above the sightline and into the public consciousness.

It's like they said in the 70s, video killed the radio star.

Live streams.

Years ago the bass player was involved in national radio. He did character voices on a few talk shows. We did guest spots occasionally. About 40 million weekly viewers. We did get a few advertisers hired us for commercials. We did a series of advertisements for Microsoft.

The few we did in recent years we had a few dozen viewers.
We haven’t released anything physical in over 25 years.

Now we just create AI artists. Zero income created so far. Mostly country music.

For me, it is for Rock and Roll. My day job makes me money and that is why my band is able to just have fun, create music and enjoy it. We get the merch and things but know we won't ever make it big. It is like being able to create something.

Distrokid is my only experience so can't really compare. I'm in a punk type band and everything we do is setup to not be disappointed. We've done a lot of free gigs and are just enjoying playing.

I'm nearly 56 but if I was younger and trying to "make it" I probably would be more worried, etc.

So many people are recording at home and putting stuff out. There is just crap everywhere. We try to be this over the hill punk rock band singing about getting old, etc.

Geezer Punk? May I suggest a song title for you:

Percocet Saturday Nights

Can be a loosely based, punkified version of Louisiana Saturday Night, possibly inbred somehow with the Scorps - Big City Nights. Be creative!

Based on a recent experience of mine. Don't ask. 😁

I'm currently finishing up another "album" and will do the oasis/discmakers thing. I have no idea what the kids are doing nowadays. LOL I used to send out emails with kits to webzines and clubs, but won't do much of that now. Even when I/we had any kind of local/regional name recognition I struggled with self promotion. Add age and laziness to the equation and you end up with a closet full of CDs...which is what I have. LOL I will probably do 300 CDs...I may sell 100 and give away another 100. Hopefully, I'll only get stuck with a handful of copies while getting some downloads.

This will be my/our 8th "album release," and the second I'm actually mixing and mastering myself so it won't cost me $5k like the old days.

Hopefully, I'll get some of that internet money.

Any one using or know about too lost, symphonic, or tunecore?????
