5150 Script User here!! I fuckin love this thing. I've had for a few months now and I'm hooked. Str8 forward brutal tone. I also use a TS9 and an MXR Zakk Wylde OD. I usually have the gains somewhere around 10 oclock and the good ol' 666 setting. can't beat it especially for the price.

I've played my block logo 5150 since '93, and it still rocks me.

Never owned one but played one about 15 years ago and I still think about it. It haunts me.

5150 combo here. thinking about keeping it just because it sounds so great and I dont know if Ill get the same tough fucking sound out of something more pricey/better reputation

Well, if anyone wants to sell one of your "spares", hit me up!!

I have a block letter combo in my practice room. Noisy one trick pony. I keep it for sentimental reasons as it traveled all over with me for over a decade.
Time and technology move on, was a great design in it's time but there are soooo many better amps today.

5150 and 5152 here. I like the 2 better but both are killer amps. The only amp so far I've preffered over them is the cali.

Add me to that list.
Got a Peavey 6505 that was modded out by FJA and sounds awesome!
I would pit this amp against ANY AMP out there.
Yeah.....its that bad ass. :D

I normally use my Tri-Axis but have been using my 5150 II lately for smaller stages. It's been amazing. There is a certain growl that I miss, the Mesa rig just doesn't sound as pissed off. If only it had a decent clean then I'd be really set.

THe simplicity of the 5150 and 6505 is hard to beat...

Just did a demo of the 6505, video in a couple of days...

what's the going rate for a non-block 5150 these days (i know the block letter ones are supposed to mimic ed's VOX tone from VH-1, but I can probably deal with the sig version)?

There's a sig 5150 and a dsl available locally for not much $$

As far as going rate, I think script heads are around $400-550 give or take $50. People try and sell the blocks for like $700-800. More power to em. Combos are cheaper.

I got my script in that lower-$ spectrum and did some of the Cam mods and a bias mod. It's a solid amp, loves to be run loud, and especially with a bias mod, way more than a one-trick.

Dammit, now I'm gonna have to pick one of these up and mod it.
One trick pony is fine with me as long as it's a reaaaaally good trick.

worth a read for anyone who is wondering the difference in a 5150/5150II

Really? I gigged every weekend, driving and flying everywhere for over a decade with my 5150 and I don't know how to use a volume knob on my guitar??

:aww:

Look, I know you love yours, OK? This is not a personal slam on you or anyone else that plays a 5150.
It does lead tones very well. That is its' one trick.
Super-duper compressed lead tones.
The high compression creates a lot of hiss.
Between the compression and noise, it can hide a lot of sloppy playing.
If that's your thing, great.
The clean channel is unremarkable.
It does have a good master volume where you can get decent tones out of it at lower volumes associated with practice studios etc,
though you are correct in stating that it is not a bedroom amp.
It is very easy to play and it sings forever on pinch harmonics which makes for great fun with a whammy bar.

But as soon as you get out of that area of tone, there are so many other amps that are more versatile and can do so many other tones far better,
and actually have a decent clean channel.

The 5150 IMO was a great design in it's time.
The day I bought mine, I was actually on my way to go buy a Marshall, but ended up playing the first 5150 that my local music store got in stock,
I was there when they pulled it out of the box and put it on the floor. I was blown away because it totally leap-frogged the boosted Marshall tone I was going for.
I took that 5150 home with me, and ended up using 5150's for well over a decade.

But as I originally said, time and technology and amp designs move forward, and on another day I had another epiphany of tone when I discovered there
are tighter, meaner, cleaner amps out there that force you to play at a higher level because you can hear every note and every unintentional pick sound or mis-fretted string.

The 5150 is fun to play and I still use it for lead tracks, and they are so cheap on the used market that everyone should have one.

But to say it's the most awesome thing ever, and to start slamming anyone that opposes your point of view,
well it kinda makes you look just a little underdeveloped and foolish.

;)
