someone told me a while back that the price is what the tag says it is and that's it. wont go down at all, is this the case?

A friend of mine used to work in the guitar department, now he teaches lessons out of the store. Company policy supposedly is no haggling on used gear anymore period, no exceptions even for employees.

He said they have some flexibility on new gear for some brands but you're more likely to buy a guitar/amp and get accessories thrown in for free or deeply discounted instead of haggling on prices now.

On used gear they will drop the price after 90 days and the store manager can lower it more I believe. New gear I am not sure about.

^^^This.

True story.

I called a GC in OH last week about a used Strat Plus they've had listed for months. They claimed that, because it was listed as "vintage," they had to ask the Hollywood store about budging on price. Yeah, right. I gave the guy my info and he said he'd check on it. That was five days ago. No response. I snagged one on Reverb Fri. night.

They sure try to hold gross on things. Cash in hand and walking away gets them in the mood. They love the price match game.

It depends on who you know and how good they are as salesmen. It's not like it used to be, but if you find a good salesman who takes care of you selling and buying your gear, then you need to keep bringing them some business from time to time. It wouldn't hurt giving them a Starbucks card on Christmas or something.

Trading in tends to help the bargaining. Otherwise, I've had luck in finding some flexibility when I've just said, "I'll buy it right now if you give me this price."

Been like this for a while now...

The one by me will not bargain at all. They used to take a cut out of their commission to make a good deal, now they don't even care.
