XTC v Marsha v SLO

I'm getting back into Bogner's lately. I have an Ecstasy (101B) and Uberschall (Rev-Blue) coming to me next week...as well as a new Bogner OS 2x12 cab. I obviously love the SLO but it's not perfect all the time and in every situation. It does what it does and I prefer the simple layout of the amp. I love the NORMAL channel's clean & crunch, just as much as the OVERDRIVE channel. Some days I'm like "HELL YEAH...", other days I'm like "Meh...". But I'm sure that happens with most guitar players.

SLO = Simple, Silky, Punchy, upper mids & nice pick attack. Stays together at high volumes!

XTC = More Growl/Jangly, lower mids, more versitile. Doesn't stay together as well at high volumes.

I've been a Soldano & Bogner man at heart fro many years now. I know the amps well and I like what they do. I'm a visual guy as well and I think Bogner's and Soldano's are some of th best looking amps out there too! :D

My .02 cents worth.

SLO is KING!!!!! +1
They definitely all sound good, but for me the SLO sits in the mix the best. Also, they are very picky about the speakers you use them with. Greenies sound good in the right cabinet, V30 can also sound "ok", but in my experience the Eminence Legends fit the tone of the SLO the best.

Thanks for posting the sound clips...its always fun to hear amp comparisons!!!
I have heard that the Eminence sound good with the SLO but have yet to come accross any. No problem, thanks for listening.

I like the Marsha the best here. Nice and juicy. Seems to respond well when you dig in.
This is a good point se7en, the Marsha is the most dynamic of these amps. The others are more compressed at similar gain levels. Although the SLO has articulation at any gain level.

Cool comparison. They all sounded very similar with the XTC being a bit darker. No losers here.

Tones aside the footswitchable loop and boost in the XTC is almost a dealbreaker for live use.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong but you're saying the loop and channel boosts are a dealbreaker for live use on the XTC? Exsqueeze me? Baking powder? :) Not sure I understand.

I have owned them all and if I had to choose one, it would be the Ecstasy. Specifically, the 20th Anniversary.

I too currently own a SLO, XTC100B & Friedman BE100 (fully optioned) along with a Bogner 20th 101A & 101B and I agree about your comment re the 20th Anniversary

Yes my mistake! These make the XTC better for playing live.

Thanks for the clips, nice playing. I like the SLO clip the best, figures since I own the other two amps.

I think the Ecstasy probably fits your playing best...at least that clip....I hear some Lynch influence there....nice riffing :D

No problem and thanks. The SLO does have a great tone.

I've had a few people say I play like Lynch, I used to say who's that? then I googled him, I had seriously never heard of him. oh and thanks.

Bumping this up from the dead.
I just recently acquired a 20th Anniv XTC EL34 model, and my searching lead me here.

Great clips! That Marsha sounded just right. The XTC was more 3D and I could hear the addictive Bogner quality.
The SLO was just downright slutty, and reminded me of everything good about the 80s, and all of my favorite solos from Lynch, Skolnick, etc.

I'll take one of each, please.

So you both prefer the 20th over the 100b? Interesting? As I never had the chance to play a 100b from clips alone I always thought the 100b would have a more open and organic tone. Why do you prefer the 20th (or are the clips misleading)?

Ciao Alex

XTC is definitely fuller and more concentrated in the lower mids than the Marsha. I think it was smooth and bigger for sure than the Marsha but it lacked the teeth in factor that the Marsha had. Marsha has this signature "hollow" sound to it that I hear in the Friedman stuff. I hear this in the judge module that was designed for the RM100 series as well. Because of that it responds well to clean boosts to juice it up. The SLO was where it was at for me in these clips. It has that signature bit of grit/fizz on top but the EQ of that amp cuts while sounding nice and full. Let's be honest, you are totally splitting hairs, they all sound good. If I had to pick one though, I'd go with SLO.

Would be interesting to hear what a boosted JCM800 can sound like against those three as well. Do you have one of those or a JMP on hand?

EDIT: nevermind, this thread was from 2012 lol.. got excited. XTC sounds better with v30's for sure. I still prefer the SLO though!

Holy thread revival!
Update: I have sold the SLO and Marsha and kept the XTC. I'm using a brighter guitar and a V30 open back cab now, which puts more cut and sparkle into the Bogner tone.
I'm done chasing my tail, the 100B is MY amp!

Here's an old V30 clip cuts like a mofo> https://www.soundclick.com/player/single ... i&newref=1

Yeah, I brought it back. :D

Nice clip. I am not getting that cut outta my 20th right now. New tubes on the way.
If they don't bring it closer to the Marshally sound of my Fargen, I'll be putting it up for sale.
