Would this be the same thing as some call the one wire mod ?

Yip, everything we're talking about is related to the one wire mod.

I just tried it and it was way too much gain and flubby but then I checked the Marshall Major schematic and noticed it's way different than my Superlead-ish circuit. I was wrong about the 1M resistor on the wiper, it's in series with the signal and reduces gain. It tamed the gain to a more manageable level in my amp (I used a 470k). Then I replaced the 220uF cathode cap with a .68uF and that tamed the flub. It's still too much with both Vols dimed but both around 3:00 it sounds way better than it did. Tweeks on that first stage make a huge difference. Plugging in the dummy jack makes the amp feel way better. Nowhere near yours but progress!

Thanks for the 2nd clip. That guitar just "marries" that Marshall so well!! I has a few Nuno Washburns but they didn't gel with my amps like that!

You have two Nuno Washburns??

Man, I wish I had the N4 though, it's on my GAS list.

Wow, just WOW!!!
Love the tones and the playing. Great job!!!

Ignites the plexi gas, thanks for that, LOL

Thank you, you're very kind my friend.

However, I'm sorry about the GAS. :D

Easily your best tones to date.. and the playing everywhere and especially at 4:07?? Damn that was a tasty lick. Loved that.

Thank you so much my friend, I really appreciate ya taking the time to listen through and comment.

That's my two handed tapping arpeggios at the 4:07, so many people asked me about them over the years I finally made a lesson video on how I do them. :)

Yeah, the Major isn't a 200 watt Super Lead, it's a totally different circuit all together.
I've modded a few Super Leads like this schematic I made and had some great results.
Try it and see if you like it, a few people I did it for really liked it.

I see you have a .022uF on V2a cathode. I have a .68uF there now and was considering removing it altogether since there seems to be so much gain to spare. I always go back and forth on that cap. :aww: Other than that, the split vs shared cathode, and the 47k slope resistor that schematic is pretty much what I did at first. When both vols were dimed it was really hissy and when played it just completely fell apart. Adding the 470k resistor on the wiper tamed the gain and made it much better. But interestingly, plugging the dummy jack increased gain BUT also sounded (and felt) better. So I'm considering increasing that resistance to ground even more, like 100k-220k (which is now more than one wire). But I'm pleased where it's headed.

Haha, you noticed that .022uF on V2a. It's a great little mod that gives it a tight and aggressive gain, it's one of my favorite tweaks.

I'm really glad things are working out better for you now. Sound like you got the gain where you need it to be.
You're definitely heading in the right direction.

FWIW, I found an old 11-page Metro thread where Ralle/Rockstah/others tried a version of it and tweaked it. I think they called it the Ralle knob mod. Basically it was like this:
Split 2k7//.68uF on V1a/b cathodes
First cathode has a 10k between pin3 and the 2k7//.68uF, this is something I had not seen before (it's not like Bogner XTC mod*)
From first plate it went .0022uF-1MA Gain-470k//470pF (series)-470k to ground-2nd grid
2nd plate also had .0022uF and from there it was stock
No bypass cap on V2a
The "Knob" part of the mod was that first 1MA gain control was a new pot mounted on back and the unused volume pot on front went between that last 470k and ground so you could increase that 470k to 1.47M or anywhere in between.

Hope that made sense. Def not a one wire mod anymore!

* - Bogner XTC mod was to solder a cap and resistor in series (several versions, IIRC one was .22uF and 10k) and then solder that whole thing in parallel with the 10k cathode resistor on the cold clipper stage. The 10k in the Knob mod was def between the cathode and the 2k7//.68.

Yeah, it kinda makes sense but there is nothing on that forum that applies to my 200w Major so I don't really go there that often.
Lots of good reads over there if you're into modded vintage Marshall amps tho. :)

Here ya go. It of course derails to "but Eddie REALLY used..." a bit but there are schematics and clips.

And I will add that your choice of microphone stands Michael, is awesome.

Lol, Sometimes you gotta improvise. :D

Michael,

I've been coming to Rig Talk since the very beginning. I think these clips are the best tones I have ever heard on here! That includes all of my own ;)

If this was the heyday of RT, this thread would be 8 pages long by now.

Your tone is world class and your playing is killer too.

Want more Nuno guitar clips!!!
:rawk:

Dan, I can honestly tell you that everyone loves this guitar.
Band mates over the years has all told me the same thing "that Nuno Washburn sounds best".
I don't know what it is about this guitar, I've played other N2's and they just don't sound as good as this one.
The alder body just screams in this one big-time for some strange reason.
Anyways, here's one you might not of heard, I don't think I've posted this sound clip here before.

Eddie says; "stop, you're making me look bad..."!

Wow, that's the biggest compliment I think I've ever received on any forum.

I'm very grateful for all the encouraging kind words, thank you kindly my friend.

I kinda took some of the outtakes and made a video of them.
If you're interested in my weird playing, check it out. :)

Killer. Makes the legends and their silly signature amps (EVH, Carvin, ENGL, Randall, etc.) sound silly.
Real tone.
Great job brother.
