Stumbled upon these dudes on instagram and kinda liked the bass tone. As I am not a bass tone expert and my favorite sound is AJFA, would like to hear what you guys think.
I am super clueless about bass tones, this one is full and like a tight spring wich I like.yes, good tone for heavy music, and it has full girth and bite with some distortion.
when I played bass I liked a full girth with bite but cutting sound, with a bit of metallic "ting" on the top end, but no distortion. I never liked distortion or fuzz on bass when I played.
Back in the day we had bi-amp rigs where you could set the crossover frequency for what went to your low and high cabs, I never liked the toneless, wooly bass sounds.
Bass tones I chased included Geezer Butler, Chris Squire and Steve DiGiorgio (fretless). These days I play mostly fretless when I play bass, which is infrequent.
I was wondering in a way if it a good quality tone for what it is, not like overall best. I just seem to like how this one sounds.Yeah, thats cool!
Because it works with everything else, and makes the song great.
There is no "best" bass tone.
The best bass tone is the one that makes the song the best it can be.
And that tone could be damn near anything depending on what else is in the track.
YMMV
Definitely viewing it in metal context. I like how springy it is.It sounds good and is fitting for that music, but wouldn't work overly well for anything outside that style. It'd sound like complete ass if you tried that tone with classic rock.
My personal preference is to go for Iron Maiden type clean tones or Lemmy style distorted tones. That tends to cover a lot of ground.
Most assume bass is bass, but it's actually a pretty broad frequency spectrum. Sure, you want the bass in there for bass, but, just like getting punch out of a kick drum, it's snap and aggression is in the higher frequencies. In funk, you scoop the mids and boost the highs, so you get a lot of snap with the bass. In rock (like above), you dial in a lot of mids with the bass so it works like a pitch shifted guitar. This one has a good amount of gain on it, like a Darkglass Microtubes. I can get a similar sound using the Griffin Analog Omega Bass Drive. I haven't been dialing the highs in as bright as that bass tone though. I don't play with a pick either. That's the key to getting the gritty dangle you hear on that track.I am super clueless about bass tones, this one is full and like a tight spring wich I like.
Steve DiGiogios I recongnise from Death, his tone is more like purring cat for the lack of a better term. Great stuff too.

Thank you for the info. I’m never going to pick up a bass, still like to listen to some nice rhythm bass work. Most assume bass is bass, but it's actually a pretty broad frequency spectrum. Well some do. If I get time tomorrow I'll snap a pic of the EQ on my SVT. The mids are bumped a little, bass is nearly flat and the highs are bumped, but less than the mids. I lean on the highs a little more for slap and shit, but I don't scoop the mids. Most assume bass is bass, but it's actually a pretty broad frequency spectrum. Let's trade settings for a bit then. We're both playing Spectors, so we should have a pretty good control.
I’m definitely not going for the referenced tone in the OP and you won’t get near it with settings like I use.Let's trade settings for a bit then. We're both playing Spectors, so we should have a pretty good control.
I'll dial mine in like yours and see what's up. Being that I'm playing more death/black metal, I don't think I'll need my funk settings anymore anyways. I'm going to go for the referenced tone in the OP (mostly).
Oh yeah, no. That's just the clean tone. I have pedals that will push me into the dirty tone in the OP. I'm just looking to try a new base tone... A new bass tone... A new base bass tone.I’m definitely not going for the referenced tone in the OP and you won’t get near it with settings like I use.
I’ll try your settings next time I play and report back. It’ll be a bit though. Currently I’m trying to get my roof done to a point I can leave it for a week or so, I go back to work tomorrow morning and my grandson will be born on Thursday morning.
I have a Team Awesome Fuzz Machine with the gate mod. It sounds awesome for shit like that. The only problem is you have to change a bunch of other shit to not get lost in the mix when it's engaged. I've always been in 3 piece bands so I'm covering extra space during solos so I used to use it for that on shit like Chevelle, Deftones, RATM, etc. I wish I could get it to just affect anything above say 80. There are a few pedals that do that. That Lomenzo pedal they used to have supposedly does. When I was paying an engineer to run my rig for me on bigger shows I could have him do some shit since I usually mic'ed my cab and sent another DI to the board. I don't brag about my skill level, but I will say my bass tone is above reproach. What I lack in skill I definitely make up for with stellar tone.Oh yeah, no. That's just the clean tone. Me neither. It screams darkglass to me.Not something I’d ever strive to use. Fits the music I guess.
