Not tons of gain, but cranking them to 8 or above helps that out somewhat.
Would certainly help you and anyone within a football field's distance get deaf somewhat.
What?
:D

I think there is something special about the 800 and it isn't gain. It's tightness, depth and feel. I came from new Marshalls, DSL50, and was searching for something thicker with better response. Even modded that DSL sucked.

As soon as I played the 800 it was a roaring machine, not a gain machine but had the characteristics and great platform that you could build on with a mod or OD in front. The basics are there for great tone for sure. I liked the 2 channel 2205 as well but stock it had some shortcomings, not real thick but still a great amp. 800 is definately the amp that defined the 80s...with mods and boosts of course. :D

I see what you're saying, and that's exactly how I feel about the Low Gain Dr. Z's I've played.

I love JCM800s. Especially my 2204. It's MY sound. It always cracks me up when guys say they don't have enough gain. You can actually have too much gain fellas.

I feel like getting butthurt and defensive.

I made it clear in the OP that I hate modern high gain amps.

Sounds like you're the one with a problem. What makes you think I was even referring to you? Chill out.

Okay, I thought you were talking about me, like I was too weak to use low gain amps.

I was being fairly light about it anyways. Notice how I called myself out for being defensive and butthurt??

It's all good. :)

imo,the secret to "awaking the dragon" with an old marshall JMP or JCM800 "is" to boost it with a good o/d pedal, then crank up the amp to at least 10 o'clock setting on the MV.i've owned 50 watters & 100 watters and some did sound better than others.i've also owned a few killer modded marshalls like the recent "holy grail" cameron jose-hg amp that pyschodave sold,my old friedman-modded Purplexi,Splawns and Soldanos...and NOTHING has put a bigger smile on my face than my old '78 Marshall JMP 2203 100-watt amp(or my '79 or my '80 JMP 2203) BOOSTED with an o/d pedal.NOTHING! ;) i dont think any amp will ever beat the tone of a boosted, cranked old Marshall either

Was that the amp that the Fonz had to hit on the side with his fist to get it rocking?
Then gave the thumbs up?

He only has one request upon delivery. He wants to Jump it.
That dumbass never learns does he?

I just had some guy offer me his Soldano HR50 (I used to own one years ago) for my JCM800.

Told me it was the "ultimate 800". I said, uh, no. My JCM800 is the ultimate 800. Thanks anyway.

Last week I had another guy offer me a Budda SD30 2x12 with road case for my 800. He came over and we plugged them in side by side. I plugged in my Les Paul Custom, and fired them both up. I was extremely disappointed in that Budda. Small, boxy and generic sounding. The JCM800 smoked the Budda up and down. Sounded huge and fat in comparison. Better high end tickle.

I had to tell him no to the trade. Cool kid. He was disappointed. CSB.

I owned a couple jcm 800 and they was nice amps, i also own a jube and i actually like it better.

JCM800's are great amps for throwing into a mix to thicken/tighten things up

hmmmmmmmm.............

I think this is a pair of JCM800s, run with a wet chorus to swash it up a bit. Pretty 80s-sounding of course with the typical fadeout at the end & keyboards.
Although the song is more rock/hard rock, those power chords during the verses sound fairly gainy to me, and 'frothy' crunchy.

Well, I"m getting the 2553 Jubilee small box head on 21 May, so I guess I'll get to see if it's cool or not!
