Amp Techs average turnaround time on mods?

I've never heard this kinda thing over the years....wild stuff.

Dude, I sent an amp to California to a FAMOUS modder here on the forum and was told 6 weeks...and I paid in full up front...it went 6 months and I had to tell him I was going to a lawyer and the amp showed up real quick after that. Didn't put the cash in the chassis...

I know of whom you speak. Didn't like how he treated me either. Wouldn't let him take another penny from me. Plenty of other great modders out there. I know others have had decent experiences with him, but he can lick my taint.

He used to have his own subforum here right? I have never heard any clip out of the MANY that get posted on the webs that sounded like anything I would want to own anyway, never understood the attraction (although clips don't always tell you the real story). Actually there was 1 time a couple years ago he was selling some amps he built from scratch (not mods) and they did sound good.

I had a brief interaction with this guy. He did an amp for a guy here on RigTalk who loved his work, so I emailed a few questions about details that weren't available on his site. This guy replied with next to no information and basically told me he was tired of tire kickers and once I paid we could talk details
Ok, here's my money, what did I just buy? lol, obviously I went in another direction....and he trotted out the "my shop just moved so things could be longer than usual". This interaction was like 3-5 years ago.

Hope all turns out well for OP

9 weeks isn't that much if he has a lot of work to do with other amps as well. But the ones I've had modding my amps didn't require payment until it was finished.

Hope it all ends well!

Had a 74 Superbass that was modded previously by him...sounded good. But you can't treat your customers that way...ever. I don't give a shit what the circumstances are. Then explain yourself and ask for understanding... But be contrite. Don't be an ass...

Thing is, I'm pretty sure the OP wouldn't have a problem waiting if the fuck stain of a modder wasn't such a dick to him.

I mean come on. Man up, admit that you fucked up and apologize. I don't care who you think you are. You have no right to treat your customers this way.

Funny how the you failed to mention how you started emailing me for updates before the amp even arrived here! I don't give regular updates and you knew that up front. I'm one man working alone and there's just no time or reason for that.

Also left out the fact it's a JCM800 Bass amp and it requires replacing damn near every part on the circuit board, many pots, adding filter caps, yet you are still paying the standard mod price with no extra charges for that. It's not a small job.
I am totally up front that there are no promises on turnaround times. If I got it done quick and it wasn't right you'd be on here bitching about that too! As I said in the email, it's not you fucking left lung, it's a guitar amp. Settle down and let me do my job.

I have 5-8 foot piles of snow all around my front yard and water leaking from my roof. I did have to move my shop also which required some construction delays. As I said in the email I know these aren't your problems, but I was upfront with the fact that things change here all the time and that is why I make no promise on turnaround times. Sorry life trumps a guitar amp.

In the end your amp will get done. To those that don't like my business practices please feel free to go elsewhere, Dyer needs the work, send it to him. I'm sure bionicmark can suggest someone, he's tried us all.

This sounds like a scene from one of those Jerky Boys tapes in the early 90s

I just joined here to say this guy sounds like a real gem. Thanks for posting though; so I can make sure to never use your services.

Awesome thread!

To jerry, it's just a guitar amp. To the OP, it's HIS guitar amp and his hard earned money.

Had an amp built once upon a time...single shop, one man show kinda deal. Dude was honest Abe up front, told me his wait time, told me his up front money demands. In turn I told him I would be a pain in his ass demanding regular updates. We complied with each others demands and got along famously. Wouldn't hesitate to go back...

All about defining expectations up front, and delivering on those expectations.

Sounds like a failure of a business model to me. I should start using this attitude at my automotive shop. Just drop your car off, pay upfront and I'll fix it when i feel like it. Don't call me, I'll let you know when it's done. Lol! What an ass.

Might as well go full on Cameron and keep the dudes amp and never give it back. I doubt he's gonna see much business in the near future... hopefully. At least Cameron's mods sound good.

LOL, what an ass...I mean wow, what a great business man, way to treat a customer(s). Posting what you did, priceless. Thanks for the warning to NEVER send anything to you for work. Great business model. I'm sure lots of customers will flock to you for mods now that your attitude and way of doing business has been made clear.
What a dick!

I email you to make sure the amp got there in good shape. The tracking # showed it getting there that day. I didn't ask for an update you asshole. I asked for an update a few weeks later and then a week after that. You ignored both. Then I waited about a month and asked for a response. I wondered why you haven't gotten as big as Fortin and Freidman. No I know why.

Good luck with this guy OP....hope you get your amp back and it works out for you. Surprised there isn't more being said on here about this. This is the exact reason amp modders can have such bad reputations. Elitist attitudes when none is warranted and being rude and acting like they are doing their customers a favor by working on their amps. BS

I sent a guitar back to John Suhr once because there was an issue with the neck pickup being weak on the high strings. The man called me himself, talked about what he was going to do, made suggestions on what he would like to do such as upgrading the bridge free, upgraded the bridge pickup for free (something I asked for and was ready to pay for no problem), and fixed the issue with the neck pickup replacing it as well. Had the guitar back inside of 3 weeks also no charge. Now that is how you treat a customer. Anyone who says I will not contact you, there is no need to update you (why because you cant write a 20 second email or are too lazy?) is not someone I would ever send my amp to regardless of the results of his mods. Good luck

Check their policy, and if anything just ask for your amp back, take the loss and move on. It's your amp.
