Remind me again how this is so historic since we already went to the moon and went around the dark side of the moon. Are we supposed to have forgotten that we already did this 6 times from 1969-1972. WTF???

Notice how the general public takes the "we" aspect on, as though they were on board for the ride. Then they talk like it's something they personally experienced and is therefore proven. Nothing but a buncha buck rogers bullshit.

If I recall, and I'm fairly far removed from the whole event, there were several reasons why it was important for the USA to make this happen.
1. We have not been there in a long time as noted.
2. With the Space Shuttle being shelved for so long it was an opportunity to 'get back at it'. Aspirations for Mars etc.
3. I believe it does help usher in private involvement and private company builders - which supposedly leads to more private investment and involvement.
4. There is pressure to beat China to the punch. There was talk that China wanted to use the Moon for military purposes. My guess is the US does too.
5. There evidently is a desire to put data centers on the moon.
6. There were some scientific reasons for this mission as well, like studying the dark side of the Moon more closely (using an eclipse I believe*).
* That is where light from the spherical sun bends around the spherical Moon providing a glimpse of a previously unseen area.
These trips cost around $2B+ and the whole Artemis program is $90B so is all this worth it? That's the question right
