Andy La Rocque !!!

Just saw King Diamond last night when the Mayhemfest hit Toronto. Andy LaRocque is one of my main influences and it was awesome to see him play again.

Noticed that on all his Dean guitars he yanks the tone knobs out and moves the volume knob farther away from the bridge. I do the same thing when I can (damn Charvel volume knob). I'm pretty sure all the bridges were Duncan Distortions. He solo'd a lot on the neck pickup as well, not sure if 59 or a neck Distortion.

He also used a Line 6, saw them set up what looked to be one of those Line 6 FBV MKII floorboards. That's two guys now I've seen in less than a year use the Line6 (other was Jake E Lee but I think his main EVH wasn't working.)
I know when it comes to shows like this that when you play songs from a whole catalog that includes lots of different clean and dirty sounds that a Line6 will work best, but I was hoping for a Marshall :) he was using a Marshall 1960AV though, he's prefers thought from what I read in interviews.

I hate the fact that I am in Ottawa and all the good acts skip us for the most part.. I mean 4.5 hours to get to Toronto on a Thursday night while having to work the next day? Forget about it. I have to try and catch King in MTL which I missed in the fall. Again, week night show and I only found out 3 days before. I am going to make the effort to try and catch them in MTL next time they roll through though. Who knows how much longer they will tour. Was it a sold out show?

Hadn't noticed that about the volume knob but my god does it ever piss me off when i am constantly nudging my volume back while playing. I guess he has gone with a 250k volume pot then? If not, those pickups would be ice pick with 500k and no tone pot!?

You aren't missing too much on this tour. Except for Slayer, King Diamond and Jungle Rot, the whole lineup is horrible. I got lawn seats for $12. The turnout was low enough that they closed the lawn section and gave everyone with lawn tickers actual seats as free upgrades. It was pretty obvoius that a tour like this is not for such large venues like amphitheaters.

The pic above seems really close though. So maybe they all weren't in such large venues or he was just really close.

Not at all.

Those pickups are designed for 500k pots. Having no tone control makes the tiniest little difference in tonality. And who's hitting the volume knob as placed on a Charvel style guitar? I can see a stock strat volume knob being in the way but the Charvel one? What are we doing Pete Townsend windmills or thrashing out some Sex Pistols tunes? You gotta be flailing away to move a Charvel placed volume pot, especially with a heavy brass knob on it. Now if it has one of those EVH or YJM style fast volume pots that moves if you look at it, that I can see. :D

Andy LaRocque is one of my top guitar players. Major influence on me in the late 80s/early 90s when I started playing guitar. He still wows me when I watch live clips today. Pete Blakk is also a great guitar player. The leads on Them are OUTSTANDING.

Another picture below of Andy, this time with the Dean V.
Yeah for some reason I have a hard time with the Charvel volume knob location on my San Dimas custom, since I do a lot of strumming type riffs and tremolo riffs in the black metal style and I keep hitting it. It doesn't move, it's not one of those low friction ones, it just bugs me that I hit it.
I have a Charvel Desolation Soloist and they put the volume in the perfect location, moved lower so it's beside where the floyd meets the bridge pickup, not directly beside the bridge pickup where regular Charvels have it. It's also slightly recessed to keep it out of the way.
Anyway just my personal preference...

Thanks, I spent an hour watching those guys wail! They totally compliment each other.
