Oh wow, well this blows.

Jim,

Do you have any documentation/emails etc on this guy? Could it maybe help with SR's PayPal claim if he has proof of a business having seen this guy pull similar stuff?

I might be able to pull something up out of a crashed Mac Office email account, but it would be from years ago, as in 5-7 years ago. But based on what I heard from my source, this guy knows all the tricks to get his money back through paypal, and it would take more money/time/effort to fight it (more than likely) than to just pay the return shipping and refund this guy's money.

I'm not going to divulge all the info I just got online from my source, as it would out him and probably cause him strife. Suffice to say, he's been informed, and knew details that point directly to a scam on the buyer's part from the get go.

I am entertaining calling paypal about this, but I want to hear from SavageRiffer first, as that would require transaction #'s, and other information to make a case for this.

I hate hearing about this kind of crap, especially when I have some history in trying to rectify crap from this guy before, which I do.

Happy to go to bat for SavageRiffer, but it's his call on how he wants to handle this. All he has to do is call me and tell me what he wants to do about it.

The crazy thing is I think Paypal already gave him a refund before deciding the case because they're already demanding that I resolve my negative balance. If he gets a refund before returning the item, then he can basically trash it and piss on it and there will be nothing I can do at that point.
There is something you can do if he does that, as I stated earlier. At this point he doesn't have his money back, and you are at a neg balance with PayPal. If and when you get your amp back he will be paid by pp. You will continue to have a neg balance until you sell the amp again and reimburse pp or just stick your own funds in there. Or, if the amp comes back damaged you can wrestle with that new issue with pp and ups or whomever he shipped with. Or, just say fuck it and go to your bank and stop PayPal's access to your bank account, and call your credit cards and do the same. You won't be able to use pp but you have your amp and the funds for your trouble. Maybe that's not the most ethical thing for you to do but it is an option. I did this, but my amp never showed back up to me and while ups/PayPal/eBay fucked with me I said fuck you to all 3 and shut my account down and blocked access to my bank. Worked for me. Have no clue where my amp went but I kept my money for them losing/stealing it.

Yeah because of the fraudulent nature of the buyer, I'm going to block Paypal from my bank tomorrow. I just don't trust Paypal to handle the process right. They have a bunch of illiterate workers there making the decisions.

paypal is the WORST!!! I wont use them. plus that new return policy, what is it? 6 months to return something??!!!!??

The bastard still has my amp. I went to the bank but they will only close my account not block the withdrawal. I can't close the account because it's tied to some important things, so I'm fucked. If he keeps my amp or sends it back in shit condition, Paypal will refund him anyway because of the fuckers they are.

Bear with me here cause I don't know how all this works but isn't this guy obligated to send you the amp back now ? If PayPal pretty much froze the money he paid you aren't they now supposed to tell this guy to now send back the amp ?

I told him to send it back unopened for a refund before he accepted delivery, but he opened it anyway. He's still got it. Now it's all in Paypal's nasty hands.

They won't actually refund him till it shows delivered to you. They will just debit your paypal account. In fact, I don't think they will pull it from your bank? They will just give you a negative balance on your paypal account and you won't be able to use it until you fix that neg balance.
I'd imagine this assclown has had many problems before as stated by Jim S, and that Paypal is aware of his previous history to some degree? That should be in your favor.

I hope so. It sucks that at this point I'd be happy just getting my amp back in the same condition I sent it. The funny thing is that I would have refunded the guy if he wasn't acting so suspicious to begin with. Right off the bat he started acting dirty so it quickly became one of those damned if you do damned if you don't situations.

They will have to hold his refund until you get your amp back in good condition otherwise buyers would be able to keep items without returning them and get their refunds... it would be utter madness and no one would buy on line. Imagine what the return rate is for GC and Musicians Friend these days, are they making money with return policies like this? Good for the buyer but...

These policies are only good for the buyer in the short term, and they are disproportionately good for dishonest buyers. They end up hurting honest buyers like you and me, people who aren't gaming the system. These policies force shops to increase prices, so they can afford to absorb incidents such as this one, they also keep the supply of used gear low, because private sellers would rather hold onto gear and not play it than to list it at the risk of getting ripped off.

It's a shit show.

No, Paypal will refund them regardless of the condition it arrives in. It happened to me a couple of years ago.

All they want is a delivery confirmation of something being shipped back. It could be a 50 pound box of Sheetrock and they'd refund him because the shipment shows it's been returned. It's best to close any account linked to PayPal if you truly want to protect yourself.

It's actually best practice to use a separate account solely for PayPal purposes at a separate bank. That way you can pull all $ from it if necessary so PayPal can't draw funds.

Whatta phucn mess!

Jim - Good on you for hopping in to help!!

Bummer dude. I haven't bought/sold used gear in eons, but I've seen too many deals like this to even feel comfortable nowadays unless it's someone I know. Hopefully will not work out too badly.

-exactly!.. very cool Jim,.. We should come up with our own amp exchange type a deal, oh wait, we already do, its called RIG TALK...

we're a dyeing breed, the reason for the reaction to this thread is because when we're forced to sell gear on REVERB & EBAY, the entire time, waiting is a FUCKIN horror show, just waiting for the inevitable train wreck to happen, then some,..... alot,...... most,..... -(raise your hands)-of us have a shit storm like this happen, doesn't exactly fill a seller with confidence, but what's ya gonna do,... either never sell gear that doesn't sell here or similar places? Keep it, sit on it, until you give it away? Or dance with the devil?

...OR...go back to the way it was when I was a kid -- use something until it's literally worn to death, and then get another. Of course, I'd never be able to go on the interwebzz ever again.  I kinda did that with my first guitar and amp...sorta...until I traded it away. That was before the days of the internet, where you were quite literally selling on word of mouth, or "trading things in" (i.e. getting trade-RAPED) to your local mom & pop shop that everyone fawns over so much these days.

Maybe I should just go back to fishing... :scared:
