Are guitar prices getting out of control?

Remember that most of the time, people are just paying for the name on the headstock.

Name recognition + laws of supply and demand. (But then again, who on earth is demanding a $5-7K Gibson? They must be out of their mind.)

I think the prices of Big Name Brand electrics have gone up also because not as many people are buying electrics like before. Its just way too expensive.
Most Electrics that are under $500.00 are not very well made with the exception of a few companies.
There are very very few companies that make really solid electric guitars for a budget price.
You buy the guitar but now you need an amp, a cable, maybe a pedal or two it starts to add up.
For many of us who grew up in the 60s 70's 80's and even early 90's, we had guitar hero's who played electric guitars. We wanted to be the next Clapton, Paige, Hendrix, Halen, Rhodes, SRV, Yngwie, Slash, Vai, Dimebag, Petrucci ect. But today not so much.

I think a lot of younger cats that are getting into guitar but they are getting into Acoustic. The acoustic guitar sales have boomed as it seems to be a big vibe these past few years, especially with all the Pop artist Like Ed Sheeran and all the the cats that were auditioning on American Idol with their Acoustics. You can get a really well built acoustic for a 3rd of the price of decent electric and you don't need anything else. You bring an acoustic to school, a picnic, pool party, BBQ, Bonfire or the beach and you can sing and play you just got the crowds attention.

I also agree that there are fantastic guitars out there for cheap now. It can be hard to spend more than $1500 or so, because the improvement is not that much in comparison to cheaper offerings.

Interesting. I haven't notice. I typically see kids wanting to make music on their computer with Ableton Live and Plugins....

As slaytallica posted,it's way more hip now to play acoustic and sing along with it. The younger gen understands it's better(more lucrative) to be self contained and be your own songwriter. Hell, even I am more impressed with someone writing a good tune and pulling it off by themselves than the next Vai or (insert shredder name here).

But spec-ing out a custom build you always dreamed of from your favorite company will always be worth it IMO.

I bought my Gibsons like a bought my Harley's.... hardly used and the original owner paid for the depreciation- not me.

I bought a squier tele for $89 and its a great playing, looking and sounding guitar ...go figure..anybody that pays retail for a gibson is a fool...

now, this is where stuff starts to get a bit sideways, IMHO.

we all love guitars, and hopefully love PLAYING them. but our choices in what guitars to buy and play surely don't have anything to do with who we are as people.....

i know that 155 is just venting a little, and i don't mean to single you out - your post just happened to be one out of hundreds i see on the forums regularly.....stuff like "only an idiot would buy a Fender Mater built Strat" and such....

but really - i wish that we could leave the gear out of it. the gear has done nothing wrong.

picking one guitar brand over another does not make you cooler, give you rock hard erections lasting longer than 4 hours, or raise your talent level or IQ points. it's just a hunk of wood with strings that we plug into MAPS and rock out with our cocks out....and hopefully HAVE FUN

Truth.....but remember folks, if you experience an erection lasting "longer" than 4 hours, see your physician immediately

I just bought a Les Paul for $3000 about a week ago. Sometimes gas get the better of you.

Window shopping the Knaggs but I'm price gouge fatigued. Owned Nik Huber, Suhr, Baker and custom shop Gibby's. Fine guitars all around but most of my favorites are Greco, Burny with pertinent upgrades. Lately I've been buying up US Masters guitars. They're a steal and play as good as any great boutique I've owned. The more desirabkle models are becoming scarce though. Craftsmanship & playability is off the wall. Zero logo appeal for most but the guitars are flat out killer.

Actually, I would like to amend my quote here.

You can get guitars custom build from a no-name luthier, and they will still charge the big league custom prices (if the luthier is truly skilled). But then again, you're paying for a CUSTOM build - not the name on the headstock.

^ This is my problem because all of my guitars are high-dollar customs.

For some, just buying a 5-figure Les Paul isn't the end of it. Last fall, a Gibson CC-Skinnerburst ($10.4k) that had the full treatment done by Historic Makeovers ($4.1k) sold on eBay for around $6k. The guy that bought it just recently got it back from HM after receiving a second refin to put the guitar closer to it's original colors. You can read all about it on the MLP forum, and there's many more over there that do this. Crazy.

My point was you can get a great guitar for $89..or you can get a great guitar for $5000..but for anyone to pay retail for any guitar is foolish with internet and all...also the used market is where its at anyway..even when ive bought new it was no where near retail price..let someone else pay retail then buy it from them...thats all

As long as people are paying the price, companies will continue putting them out at that price.
