If I was his age with his money the last thing I'd want to do is go on tour or make more depressing suicide inducing music. I'd be seaside on some Greek island sipping muscat and eating olives wondering which murphy lab or private reserve I was going to order this week and then hit vespers at sunset. Maybe open a studio and offer services to local musicians who could use a helping hand.
He is never going to do that because he's a perpetual teenager.
When you strip away the massive stadium production and the musical talent of David Gilmour and Richard Wright, the underlying themes of the actual words Roger Waters wrote about are insanely childish, heavy-handed, and simplistic.
His lyrics endlessly rely on black-and-white, squealing teenager anti-establishmentarianism. His lyrics have almost no nuance, presenting the world through a rigid lens of corrupt authority figures versus helpless victims. Pink Floyd's music having any narrative weight relies on a listener being at an age (teenage retards) or in a state of mind (stoned off your ass) where basic, childish anti-war, anti-greed slogans feel incredibly profound and like, soooo deeep maaaaan.
The media's framing of these idiotic ideas as "grand" has nothing to do with the intellectual depth of the lyrics, and a lot to do with the scale of the presentation. The press conflated the theatrics and the sonic atmosphere created by the rest of the band with intellectual brilliance on Waters' part.
When you separate his childish, basic lyrics from the rest of the band and the expensive stage props, the illusion of the "genius auteur" falls apart pretty quickly. It reveals an angry, technically limited musician leaning on the talent of his bandmates to prop up his very simple, very childlish personal political grievances.
