just moved to california from maine,..i was 14 years old,..my prized possesions being a no-name maroon SG copy and a crate amp..(first generation that actualy looked like a wooden crate), and an original yellow DOD preamp overdrive 250,..felt i was a pretty good guitar player,..i could play GOD OF THUNDER & DETRIOT ROCK CITY,..(except for the leads of course),...

we go over the bridge to oakland to visit my cousins,...he has a les paul copy,..and it has all kinds of effects built into it that he got at sears,...he puts on VH 1,. it was the first time i ever knew of them,...then he whips out his sears-paul and starts doing tap ons and shit,.....i was so disgusted i went home and sold my guitar and amp (kept the DOD pre 250)..bought a univox 3/4 scale bass,...played it more like a guitar (lots of power chords& distortion)...

at the time i hated VH,...it was a departure from the "serious",..."meaningfull" music i was listening too,...black sabbath,..led zeppelin,..etc, it was fun,..happy,..."party-music",...but of course i couldnt escape it,...and secretly i had all of there albums as soon as they came out,..hid them in a secret record bin behind my donna summer , neil diamond and misc country albums,.

FAIR WARNING (has 2 of my fav songs),...I REALY LOVE THE DARKER PLAYING ON THIS ALBUM,..GUESS ED WAS PISSED THE THE PRODUCER WAS SIDING WITH ROTH RATHER THAN HIM,...BEING THE CONTROL FREAK HE IS,....SEALED VH's FATE

WOMEN & CHILDREN FIRST (yeahhhh,..ilike the way the line runs up the back of the stocking)

VH 1

VH 2

1984,..I CANT BELIEVE PEOPLE EVEN LIKE THIS ALBUM!!!,...it was there sell out album!!,..it's a girls album,...

Every song on that album is a keeper, except I gotta say "I'll wait" is my worst roth-era song. Just don't like the keyboards on it.

you see, and I really like that song, it makes me happy

That's why I don't like it ;)

VHI changed the rock world forever

put on "i'm the one" right now, and it's as fresh and larger than life as it was in 1978.

"feel your love" is funky and full of swing and attitude. you can easily picture ed, dave, and mike standing toes hanging off the front of the stage attacking the song with joyfully arrogant energy while alex delivered the infectious tasty backbone.

eddie's tone was so alive and three dimensional...a fire that kept growing hotter with endless well of fuel.
and to have his tone, chops, and musical vision so fully realized right out of the gate on his debut album when he was 23 years old defines why he became a worldwide legend.

Man............what a GREAT PICTURE!!!
I can even imagine seeing that or being there..........
No wonder Eddie lost his mind!!

My favs in no particular order are vh1, 1984, fair warning... But there's incredible stuff on all those albums, on diver down you have "Hang em High", "Little Guitars", damn those sings are cool...

How can anyone say 1984 is a "sell out", it has "girl gone bad", "house of pain"... Those songs still knock ms on my ass every time I hear em!

Let's face it, any track from those albums basically kicks ass on any "rock" music that's been released in the last 15 years.

Mentoneman, the keeper of all historic articules and facts regarding tone.

May his might be strong and courage neverending.

VH II for the tone and vibe

Fair Warning for the pinnacle of their art/writing

I dig some Vai, but I will probably never grasp why Eat em and Smile is so revered. Then again, I prefer Sammy Hagar to Dave, even though the Roth era albums themselves had more songs that I like. I just can't stand Dave himself.

I have heard Gene Simmons mention recording he did with VH, before VH1. Did that really happen and has any of that work been released or leaked?

the demo. i have some of the songs on a cd somewhere. early versions/arrangements of some of their classics.

i have an even cooler live recording from bogarts in san bernardino in 76 and they play zz top and aerosmith covers and eddie's tone and playing are redonkulous.

Oh yeah defintely happened...check it out.

I'm sure some will point you to the whole original tracks but this is a nice sample.

Little more back story...Gene had gone to see George Lynch's band "The Boyz" in hope's of signing them etc... Instead he saw the VH boys open up and that was that. Gene signed them up...paid for the recordings, told them if he couln't get them a deal he'd let them out of the contract which he did, also flew them to New York to audition for Kiss's manager who was not interested. In the end Gene couldn't really help them out and I'd say since Kiss were in high gear probably didn't have the time to put much more into it...I would say that what help he gave them raised they're profile within the industry as they would be signed a year later.

Also Eddie and Alex played on Gene's demos for the Love Gun album and in fact Ace's solo to Christine Sixteen is note for note EVH.

yes it's true,...simmons took them to the studio,..made a demo,..he shopped it around,..no one was interested,....he gave the tape to VH,......a little intersting thing from back in the day after his first interview in GP,...there was a list of heavy weights who accused eddy of ripping them off almost note foe note!!,...i rember tony iommi & ace frehley saying that..

but my thoughts are this,...who did iommi and frehley rip it off from?.....for every piece of original stuff i come up with,...there's 10x as much stuff i steal from someone else,..then tweak it to make it my own,..isnt that what we all do?

then theres the stuff i "thought" i made up,..but turns out it already existed,..!!!! couple months ago i was i went over to a fellow guitarists house,...so i show him a new song i am working on,...he says,.."i know that song"....he plays "zero the hero" ....and i swear to good i dont even own that sabbath cd,..yet it's alsmost note for note,...i had to go home shortly after.

some personal vh trivia

my old hs girlfriend's family was friends with the roth family.

i get a "guess what i did this weekend?' call from her one day, bragging about the fact that she and her family hung out with the whole band around their hotel pool all day, talking about road stories while they were on Oahu vacationing after a world tour. i almost broke up with her that second.

my sister in law went to school and was good friends with one of the cast members of eight is enough, susan richardson.

one day out of the blue susan calls sis-in law to come up to lake arrowhead for a party. sis and her hubby show up to a mellow shindig...keg, bbq...about 10 people. one of whom was valerie bertinelli. woah..big time hollywood hottie....
my bro in law chats with some long hair dude at the keg. fire up a game of frisbee. bro notices an interesting necklace on the hessian..V something...

q:what's that...

a:my band

q:what's the band's name

a:van halen

q:so that makes you

a:i'm ed, nice to meet you...

Cool story

I bought VH II on vinyl for a buck fifty a couple weeks ago. It's my favorite album of theirs, but maybe not the best musically.
