I like that amp...it did exactly what I needed it to do. It added the girth in the low mids that I felt I was missing on the CD I just recorded (without taking away from the Titan's tone at all).

At this point I'm going to try and pick up a different amp instead to run with the Titan's for the lead tone as well as use for all my live tones alongside the Titan (I'm thinking Cobra)

which ever one you have will be the best sounding, in my case its a sig....but yes they are the same

Internet = Whatever you don't have, or can't get new is the better one.

Sadly, that is called 'prestige'.

So as long as it's in good working condition and a good price there's not really anything to ask the guy about?

I'm hearing more gain and clarity from my block 5150. it has the stk tubes in it, usa power tubes. had other sig 5150's and there is a difference, blocks are better imho

what you are hearing is nothing more than component tolerance differences.

unless you go way, way back, im talking early early early model block letter's when in their first year of production after van halen released them to public after their summer tour for F.U.C.K. - they used orange drops instead of xylene capacitors. those models actually do sound alot better.

anything else and 90% of the time you are hearing nothing more than tolerance differences in resistors and capacitor values themselves - the rest of them have been made with cheap tubes and xylene capacitors to cut corners on production costs.

Peavey never used orange drop caps. They have always used caps made by Illinios Capacitor. The older ones were orange, but they weren't orange drops. Same caps.
The only differences in the amps are these:
The pots changed in look, still all made by CTS. This happened within the first few years.
The power amp circuit board layout changed in the 5150II after it was out a couple years.
The 5150 started using that same power amp board just before it became the 6505.
The manufacturer of the output transformer changed at some point after it became the 6505. Peavey always used this manufacturer for the power transformer and for the XXX/JSX amps, but used a different manufacturer for the 5150 output transformer. The early 5150 did not have a different transformer than the later signature amps as some people have claimed online.
The ribbon cables were changed recently to a heavier duty thicker wire instead of a flat ribbon cable.
Main difference, different tube suppliers thru the years.
Jerry

I think the difference is down to the tubes. I have had all 3 versions, and they basically had the same general tone, but my old block logos with old original tubes sound sweeter, I had a 6505 with Ruby Tubes stock and it was a bit harsher.

this

tubes make BIG differences

What Jerry just posted makes a great point.
I know you can put any 10 amps, quality stuff I might add in a row and play all of them and ' YOU WILL GET ONE FROM THE BUNCH THAT SHINES '
Same with 10 guitars of the same model.

I guess I'm an odd one as I liked my 5150II with JJ's much better than the signature model with JJ's that my singer owns and I've been playing recently. Granted, the 5150II was through a 5150 cab and the signature is through a 1960.

Part tolerance is my hypothesis. No two circuits are identical based on 5 to 20 percent tolerances. They will all sound a little different, choose the one that sounds best!

I've heard some block logos that left me less than excited and have heard some sig logos that were amazing. Go figure.

I have a sig model now but I had a new 6505 before and I think the sig model just sounds slightly better to my ears. It has slightly better note separation in the distortion and just sounds a little bit more open. Maybe I just got lucky but it's definately a beast. I did the bias mod to both amps BTW so essentially they should sound exactly the same. Maybe this amp does have a different brand OT than the newer one I had.....who knows.

I was going to answer, but Jerry already did, and he's da' man!

(As Jerry points out)

The original 5150 Block Logo's came with Sylvania STR (387/415) 6L6's that were (are) KILLER!!! Get 4 of these matched for around $300 bucks and your Signature model 5150 will sound as good as the 5150 Block Logo ... period. (These tubes biased properly, last virtually "forever".... and tonewise - put Russian tubes to shame. (although that's not saying much... Russian tubes....hehehe)
