So I might grab a DC-5 combo but I dont really want to go the combo route if it sounds like ass through the internal speaker. If it only sounds right through a closed extension cab then maybe I should just wait for the head...... How do you guys like the DC5 combo ?

I've played them and they sound pretty good to me; however I haven't played it side by side with the head. If worse comes to worse and you get it and don't like it through the speaker, it's the same chassis so you could get a head cabinet and convert to a head.

In general, I ALWAYS prefer going head and separate cab route. Just so much nicer that way usually.

The DC-5 combo sounds perfect the way it is.

I had a DC 5 combo recently and could not gel with it. Flubby bottom. To dark, and the gain is very busy.I tried tube and speaker swaps until I was dizzy. This is my second DC 5. The first was an early head. I know a lot of people like them but I couldn't find any magic in them.
I think the best Mesa on a budget for Metal ( or any style) is the Stiletto. You can buy them under a grand all day. I run mine thru a 1x12 for grab and go rehearsals and a 4x12 for bigger gigs. Can't beat it. Mine is a Deuce Stage II and there is more than enough gain in there for metal.
