EMG 81 alternatives?

I would put in a Duncan AHB3. I prefer the 85 over the 81 by a longshot. The AHB3 is the nicest active I've tried. Tight and searing with no icepicks and has a really nice full bottom without being overpowering or muddy.

between the miracle man and the warpig, which is tighter?
Never played the Miracle Man, but I've always heard it shared more in common with the 85 than the 81. I've heard the Painkiller is the most "81-like" of the BK range because of the prominent aggressive high mids. The Warpig is nothing like the EMG 81 though. I've owned the alinico 5 & ceramic versions. The A5 Warpig is polar opposite of the 81. The ceramic Warpig is a little closer but the inherent voicing of that pickup is still pretty different than the 81. Both the A5 & ceramic pigs are awesome though.

What about the Hetfield EMG's weren't they designed to be more passive sounding? Maybe they are what you are looking for.

Don't want actives. That's why I asked about passives. I tried 3 versions of the Blackouts and didn't care for any of them.
Killertone, I've got an original 21-22K "Full Range" in the bridge of my Raider, and a custom wound neck model. In my Custom Mockingbird I have a "Custom Hot" in the bridge ( I believe it's around 16.5-17K) and a custom single coil in the neck that's voiced to sound closer to a P-90. In my NJ Mockingbird I have the newer version of the "Full Range" which is around 27K and it's HOT. I like it, but prefer the original 21-22K version. And no, I've never tried a Painkiller. Once I discovered the Manlius pickups, i stopped buying other brands. You should get a hold of him and have him make you a custom job...Or get a hold of me.

The only passives I've been happy with is the Suhr Aldrichs. When I want a little more of an active tone I just turn up my EMG SPC control.

Cool. I'll give you a shout later on.

I just saw an ad for the BK Aftermath, it looks neat. Wonder how it sounds.
