Tried all the Overdrive pedals as boosts - back to the old Boss SD-1 - Video

I love me some SD-1, but also like having different flavors available.

Currently on my board:

Griff Chiron 3.0
SD-1
Tamura modded TS
Duncan 805

I don’t really use other effects other than an EQ in the loop and gates, so I can have different flavors on demand.

With that said, I need to thin the herd at some point. Have a whole drawer full of very nice boost pedals I am not using.

Interesting….I have the 3.0 and LOVE it. What did you like better about the original?
he might have the 1N60 diodes in his that I talked about in a another thread ..... other than that ... all the parts are the same .... just more options on the 3.0

I didn't have many matched pairs of the 1N60's ..... they were my favorite out of all the NOS Germaniums I had / bought for the run ...

I still match germanium diodes to original Klon specs ... but those 1N60's were unicorns ... and if I would have known how good they were ... in all honestly the public wouldn't have gotten them

My Soopah Dupah drive is nuts.
Help me out with some settings please. I haven’t been able to get along with mine.

I am 100% confident it is an awesome pedal, but so far I prefer my stock SD-1. Has to be user error!

Makes sense.

Just a bit clearer. Also a bit easier to dial in a great tone, probably because I'm not smart enough for all the knobs and switches.
I actually PM’d Wayne when I first received it because one of the knobs (don’t remember which and I’m not in my guitar room) seemed redundant to me, then he explained it to me and it made sense. It’s the reason the Chiron is so great as the second boost when double boosting.

Well your stock SD 1 has a buffer in it. Your rig may need that buffer to do what you want. I use mine in front of an already driven UK styled amp for best results. Just the drive itself into a clean is not gonna get what you want.

The Chiron rocks man.

I should have been more specific. I’m using it as a boost into high gain amps (Cherry Bomb, MC II, Mark III+ and 90’s Reissue Dual Recto).

Prob my favorite overall to use as a boost on a clean or driven or whatever is my little Blues Joliet OD. Really great little thing.

Ah then it may just not be for you. Lets more top end through than the standard SD as IMO.

it's the same circuit minus the buffer .... the doopah just has band width and clipping options ...

with the frequency pot ... the middle setting is stock .... with the clip pot the top position is stock .....

that should get you a good starting off point ...

FWIW .... I had a 3534 for a minute ...... loved boosting the blue channel .... the red channel didn't want anything to do with any boost I put in front of it ...

all in all .... I experienced noise problems with the loop ... and moved it

@HowieJams since you dig the SD1, you would likely love the Griffin Super Doopah. It has the stock SD1 plus other options to change the clipping type and Hz cutoffs. In front of a low gain plexi circuit it can do 70s through Pantera! Mine is a keeper.

@griff10672 do you have any TS based drives?

ummmm maybe a 100 or so ....

I know it's going to sound like I'm trying to sell Howie a pedal .... but the 3534 I think would benefit a lot more with true by pass offerings ...

if I remember right when I had one .... buffered pedals didn't play all that nice with it ... that red channel has so much friggin gain ...

For me personally, it's really hard to beat the good ol' SD-1 or the popular Ibanez/Maxon TubeScreamer variants.

The SD-1 is the absolute king of value though.
