What's a good oil/conditioner to use on your neck/fretboard?

I have an unfinished maple as well as your standard rosewood and ebony.

Also this is great for the backside of the neck.

Old English Lemon Oil...

Works great.
Leave the Linseed / Tung oil for gun stocks...
the lemon oil gets your finger schmutz off the fretboard and leaves a nice feel for the fingers.

You're thinking of tung oil and tru oil - used for decks or gun stocks.

Linseed oil is what ESP uses. No sealers or waxes. If it is good enough on their necks it is good enough for anyone elses.

L.Omar Henderson, PhD., is a research chemist who also plays a clarinet made from Grenadilla wood. He has extensively researched the topic of bore oils, consulting with conservators in many European and American museums as well as principal musicians in major orchestras. This is what he has to say on the topic of bore oils:

"4. Mineral oil merely coats the surface, giving it a bright sheen, but does not penetrate the wood. This oil prevents absorption by a plant oil after the fact. This includes most bore oils, but not all. Read the label. Most so-called fretboard treatments and bore oils are no more than inexpensive mineral oil with a scent added, like lemon."

Does it make any difference with maple fretboard vs rosewood and ebony use with the Willcutt product ?

This is a must read to understand this topic:

Yup... been using Fret Doctor for a few years now and I am very happy with the results.

Fret doctor is what I use too and it works well. I use it once a year. Never tried it on an unfinished maple board, but I will soon on my music an sterling 5 base, which has an unfinished maple board.

I only put mineral oil on my Rosewood. Between that and the oil from fingers, the board will outlast the player.
