Guitar + headphone players - What are you using?

Would love to hear more opinions and advice.

@chumbucket they got them DT770 Pro X now with detachable cords, what ya think?
I've recently picked up a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO 250 Ohms. They have more high end than my Sennheisers and they EQ well. They probably have the best EQ profile of any of the BD line (at least in my price range). It would have been nice to have a detachable cable but the sound was more important to me.

Guitar -> Amp - PS2 -> Axe FX -> Headphones

Or

Guitar -> Preamp -> AXe FXIII -> Headphones

Or

Guitar -> Axe FXIII -> Headphones

Basically depends on how much time I have to kill and want to spend on setup. A lot of manual connections to be made and then torn down kind of makes my guitar sessions painful. But I prefer the sound of analog amps.

Do you EQ headphones somehow differently?

DT990 Pro X have detachable cables 👍🏻

Guys, when you write “headphones” please do let know what model you using, that’s the part that interests me the the most. Thanks in advance 😁

The Pro X models are different. The other impedance models are different as well. The regular 250 ohm DT990 Pro can be EQd to the Harman target (or whatever your preferred target is) very easily, especially after you break the ear pads in.
I think that the DT990 Pro 250 is the best open back headphone that you can get for less than $300. My Sennheiser 58XX and 6XX don't get used anymore. They roll off too much high end. I'm using headphones to listen to music as well as playing guitar through them.

The usual slew of pedal effects, followed by Walrus Audio ACS1. That feeds a pair of Sony MDR – 7506 phones.

Would like to upgrade the phones at some point.

Damn, so other imdendance also matters? I can’t go for 250 ohm ones, as I don’t have an amp for them.

Reviews said Pro X are just as good. Not true?

And apparently I won’t be able to equalize them, as no equalizer at hand either.

What I need is to choose a pair of headphones to use with my compact phone practice rig through an Apogee Jam+. So I need something good from the get go and budget is scarce.

Some people also say about piercing highs in DT770/990. Matter of taste it seems?

So, you're using a phone. Iphone or Android? Have you considered IEMs?

I’m using an Iphone with Tonebridge app. I do have free Bias Fx 2 and some other stuff, but mostly use Tonebridge. I plug through Apogee Jam+ as I mentioned, and someone on reddit told me it’s amp can drive HD6xx to 107 db peak, which seems a bit low, right?

IEMs are quite an unknown land for me and I think overears would suit me better.

Yeah, you're SOL with regards to system-wide EQ while using an iPhone although there may be a work around in an app. The HD6XX are 300 ohm, so if the Apogee can drive them to 107 db, you could easily drive the 990 Pro @ 250 ohm. The Apogee output impedance is 30 ohm.
80 db is a comfortable level for headphones. Anything louder could damage your hearing over long periods. YMMV.

So even though output impendance is 30 ohm, it still can drive 250 well?

Oh yeah, I rechecked, it was oratory from headphones sub who said this amp can drive HD650 to 109 db even with 1.9 Volts. So potentially that’s loud enough, right?

Yes, it's perfect. You want the amp output impedance to ideally be about 1/8th of the headphone impedance. You get better transient response and bass.

Wow, thank you for teaching me!

Also how is DT770/990 Pro different from DT770/990 Pro X? They position the latter as a facelift model for the former afaik.

I rarely play guitar through headphones, but have several I use to test a mix/master. I’ve collected several over the years:
DT 1990 pro
Focal Listen Pro
Focal MG Clear Pro
Audeze LCD-MX400
AKG-702 - I think horrible, hate em.
DT -770

The Focal Listen Pro are closed back, great for tracking, I think would be very good for playing guitar through. The DT770 are also closed back and pretty good for that.

I recently got a ToneX Plug that sounds great using captures I made of my real tube amps.

The Pro X versions have completely different drivers, lower impedance, and are not the same headphones. The 990 Pro has been a studio staple for decades. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I don't know anything about the 770s but I'm guessing the X versions are different there too. I personally wouldn't consider closed back headphones for playing guitar. YMMV.
