Guitar + headphone players - What are you using?

The Pro X versions have completely different drivers, lower impedance, and are not the same headphones. The 990 Pro has been a studio staple for decades. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I don't know anything about the 770s but I'm guessing the X versions are different there too. I personally wouldn't consider closed back headphones for playing guitar. YMMV.
Oh, they just had a detachable cable and they say that piercing highs have been rolled off a little in Pro X. I heard 990 are especially notorious for that.

WAZA Airs. They sound fine. Worth the price? probably not but I bought them years ago. :dunno:

It's a matter of personal taste I suppose but I've never heard piercing highs on my 990s, although, once I got them, I realized how much high end information was missing on my Senns.

Oh, I see. Wish I could try some and understand what’s going on.

I have a pair of the positive grid spark go's, for what they are they are pretty great. I don't use them much but I try to avoid using headphones unless I absolutely have to.

The mini desk monitors would be my recommendation, iLouds, Adams.. etc.. if you're in a place where you can watch a TV without bothering others you can use small monitors without bothering others.

You can. Buy them on Amazon and return them if you don't like them.
Good news! Apparently a shop in my city got them Beyers, all the variants we mentioned and then some. I’ma go see if they have some pairs to test.

I pickup up a Sennheiser HD600 set a couple weeks ago because I read so much about them. The reviews say they are light on the bass, but I was extremely surprised at how good they sound. I’d definitely look at those.

Okay I went to that shop. Only had 990 pro X as a display model, so only tried that.

What in a muffled hell it is? Sound is distant and nasal, palm mutes distort/rattle/fart on moderate/low volume.

It is either my transportable rig is shit or that pair is counterfeit. I can’t find a better explanation and I am puzzled.

AJFA on youtube sounded ok. I am confused.

I have been using Ollo Audio S5X headphones and I like em.

I haven't heard the X versions. They don't seem to do as well in reviews either.
The regular 990 Pro units have been studio staples for decades for a reason.
That being said, if prerecorded music sounded good through them, I'm guessing your rig was part of the problem.

I swear by these. I can and have mixed entire records on them.

At least for me personally, the 990s have more high end detail and the Sennheiser low end is cleaner, louder and better

Which you prefer probably boils down to what frequencies are the "trouble frequencies" for you personally - I generally have a harder time getting clarity and separation with low end, so I prefer the senns, but I imagine if someone has the opposite predilection they would prefer the high end detail of the 990s

In any case they are both great cans

Excellent point! I am in the market for a new set of $400 and under headphones. Researching a lot and unless I could A/B some in real time, I am having trouble pulling the trigger.

Either of the ones mentioned, the beyer 990s or the sennheiser hd600s are both great places to start :dunno:

I would youtube them and listen to a few peoples opinions, and judge them based on your own tastes and try to figure out what would work best for you

I like the HD600s, especially a "broken in" pair; some prefer the 990s, there's a million great headphones out there

Both of those are on my short list. HiFiMan have my attention as well. Have not heard of them until I started my research.

Sennheiser HD600's are great.. but be aware they are open back so if your jamming in a quiet room and someone is trying to concentrate on something they will hear your ass having fun and get irritated. It goes the other way too, I'll be doing a silent recording in the bedroom, wife will come in and turn on the tv thinking I got headphones on and I won't hear shit... drives me nuts every time lol.

Hifiman are notorius for their poor quality control from what I see while researching the market.

You think my guitar signal was clipping/too hot?

I even assume the pair was counterfeit. Do we have a universal method to separate a good headphone from a bad headphone? Because palm mutes distorting dunamic was a big surprise. Hope old 990 is not like that.

I will probably buy some Sennheiser blindly in the end if I find an open box bargain deal. HD600, HD490 and HD550 are getting good reviews, but then again, can’t try them myself sadly.

The Beyerdynamics should have a serial number on the inside of the band that you can check on their site to see if they're authentic.
