Guitar Prices

Well if you bored plenty of Nazi skinhead groups in Indiana i hear they're a blast at parties.
not serious.

Everything is expensive as shit here in the U.K. also. A lot of my stuff I got used but even on the used market, everything is basically double or more what I paid for it. Seems like the tipping point was about 5ish years ago.

I guess I don’t really need more stuff anyway.

Yeah, a lot of prices are ridiculous these days. Off the charts in many instances. I don't make big money anymore. My guitars were reasonably priced when I bought them. Also, 4 of them were free: 3 when my friend passed away. Another friend gave me a Martin. For the ones I buy, if the hardware on them is great, then I'm all set. I also snag some guitars that I know will be monsters after I hot rod them. I used to be a tech, so gettin' 'em ready for battle is easy.

A few years ago, a friend of mine in the U.K. said Marshalls both new and used, were much less money than over here in the states, which makes perfect sense. Have those gone up as well?

The sales world in about every catagory has slowed like molasses in Februrary.
I do 500 mile searches for gear every day and its been the same overprices chump-change stuff for months and nothing is selling.
Good thing we got a "businessman" in charge.

I don't know man. I've seen plenty of good sales in our Classifieds forum with great prices. And why are you searching on gear up to 500 miles away and why is everything Trump's fault? I guess everything was great for you during the Biden era :dunno:

Sorry @IndyWS6 - I shouldn't have perpetuated the political BS

Top tier delusion I would guess

@op, meh. Everything fun and cool that I liked to do basically doubled in price in 2 years during Covid. Everything has basically consistently gotten worse my entire adult life and I’m guessing that continues until something crashes or gets reset in some way

Could be any of a number of factors. For one, the wood being imported may have gone up in price as it grows more scarce over time, and I'm specifically talking about rosewood and mahogany, not the sitka spruce and maple you get quite easily in America.

Another reason is of course the tariffs that have been imposed on most products. This would lead to higher prices for consumers, in this case the guitar companies that import the wood. In the case of India, this was as high as 50% not too long ago, and Brazil had some of the highest tariffs imposed on it too.

A third reason is that because everything has become more expensive, the salaries in America have also risen, which puts pressure on the bottom line of the guitar makers. So to ensure that profits remain the same, or increase, they've hiked prices.

A fourth reason could just be simple demand and supply. Looking at some of the companies we're talking about, there is no end of demand for Suhrs or Fenders or Gibsons. People have enough disposable income to buy maybe three, four or more every year. Just look at some of the custom shops, with no dearth of orders. So the price adjustment could reflect the fact that enough people are willing to drop $4-6k on guitars without a second thought.

Fifth, made in America has always commanded a premium for most products. It may not be reasonable - we've all heard so much about QC at Gibson, for example - but this premium pricing is as much a consequence of owning an American brand that also manufactures the product in the USA. And given the MAGA war cry, things may get more expensive until they hit a price ceiling.

In that regard, I'd just observe that most of the people on this forum don't strike me as being as well off as the folks on TGP, me included. We all detest the tan pants brigade, but those losers are buying Dumbles and Klon Centaurs at massively inflated values, whereas most of us sh*t our pants over the Wizard in the Classifieds that's going for $5k and still hasn't sold.

Same here. It's likely there will be a crash given the cyclicality built into the international financial system. Peaks and troughs are how it all works, so that at every trough, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer as a consequence of jobs being lost and stocks tanking. And when it's a peak, the rich get even richer as their stocks surge and the poor get poorer as they put money into those stocks without realizing that the rich will dump their stock ahead of the next trough and then pick it up when the poor sell to feed their families or continue payments on their mortgage.

Can you believe Bernanke won a Nobel for just stating that? No solution offered, "it is what it is".

Just look at this Bitcoin malarky. How many accounts do you think there are worldwide? Not even 300 or 400 million. And the accounts that are there, are they all owned by different people? Or do the same people own hundreds or thousands of accounts and then engage in circular trading between their "anonymous" accounts to drive up the price before dumping it when the next technical ceiling is reached.

It's a crock of sh*te, but believe me: the tan pants brigade and the crypto and other billionaires are going to fight you to prevent this cosy little tea party of the rich from coming apart at the seams.

Fight the good fight, man. Expensive guitars aren't even all that important in the grand scheme of things, all that matters is how well you play.

You sound so much like me I had to reread your post to make sure it wasn't me, lol. I never really got too upset about getting older until rumors of people screwing with social security came up. Don't jack up my retirement. I've worked since I was 15 years old and I'm almost 56. I just want to eventually be able to retire and just do nothing.
