It is generally expected that a legit jazz horn player would be capable in a blues setting since jazz is inextricably linked to blues.
Not really, this guy cut his teeth in Charlie Parker's band even being the band leader at points.
He went from that, basically he's a innovator, a guy with the unique ability to put together groups of musicians that expanded outward, from Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin on and on.
The genius with Miles was not so much his technical prowess, it's a musical intellect that he can create completely unexpected lines. Being cheesy is exactly exactly the opposite. Being cheesy is predictable, you know the chord changes before they happen, you know what they're going to do on the fretboard, you know what scale they're going to play you know how they're going to end the solo before they even do it. That's not your knowledge in particular, that's you just sharing an innate cheesy mindset.
So no, Miles had nothing whatsoever to do with the blues.
For him to even talk about it it's kind of demeaning and it paints him into some sort of corner where he has to explain blacks or black culture to of all fucking people Harry Reasoner.
Do you have to be black or white or Chinese or Indian to play the blues?
You have to feel pain man, you have to know pain.
Now you think a guy like Robert Johnson who used to go town to town making money playing guitar and singing on the street corner, do you think that he moped around and singing about pain and this and that
No, people were suffering enough already, he's coming in there to entertain and lift spirits and when people feel good they dip into their pocket because that's a value. Is the original version of Come on in my Kitchen a blues song...yeah it is. Can other people relate to it other than blacks? of course, our boy von zipper have the blues? I don't think so. Does he play the blues? No, he plays a facsimile version with high technical skill and a guitar. The bits I heard, there wasn't a blues note in there.
How about Eric Clapton, is Eric Clapton a blues guitarist biggest jerk? What about Stevie Ray Vaughan? Surely Stevie right?
* I see above that you had mentioned Eric Clapton, people were going around writing Clapton is God, they weren't talking about him being god of the blues that's for sure
